The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area is March-October but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Duties

These positions are located in Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, in the Visitor Resource and Protection Division. The individuals selected for these positions will perform a variety of resource and visitor protection duties including but not limited to: enforcement of federal and state laws, regulations, and policies, vehicle and foot patrol, front country patrol, back country and wilderness patrol, emergency response, emergency medical services, search and rescue, visitor stewardship and orientation, wilderness management, boundary enforcement, protection of natural and cultural resources (wildlife, plants, archeological sites, historic building) and wild land fire suppression. Collateral duties may include horse and bicycle patrol. Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level. As a Park Ranger (Protection), you will perform the following duties: Conducts law enforcement investigations of crimes and offenses violating park rules. Works with law enforcement personnel in investigating crimes, accidents, interviewing witnesses, and interrogating suspects. Collects and maintains evidence. Patrols roads, traffic, hunting, lake and waterway, and backcountry and wilderness. Responds to emergency calls, taking action to resolve problems and preserve the peace. Pursues and apprehends violators, subdues unruly, violent, or disruptive individuals. Monitors and inspects buildings, lands and shorelines, leased lands, concessions, docks, and roads. Serves as a member of all-hazard operations to include search and rescue and wildland and structural fires. Assists with inventorying, stocking, monitoring, and maintaining Emergency Medical Service (EMS) equipment.

Additional Requirements Continued: You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. Government housing is available. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 10 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes. Applicants must be at least 21 years old. All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-09/20/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). Selective Factors: Applicants must meet ALL of the following to qualify: Mandatory Law Enforcement Commission: Must currently possess, previously held (within the past three years), or be able to obtain a valid Type II (seasonal) or higher National Park Service (NPS) Law Enforcement Commission, or equivalent, by 09/20/2023. Mandatory Minimum Age Requirement: This position has a mandatory requirement that applicants must be 21 years of age or older. AND Applicants must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement. GS-05 Level Experience: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is defined as: assisting in preliminary investigations of crimes (e.g., interviewing witnesses and interrogating suspects); conducting patrols such as road, hunting, lake and waterway, and backcountry and wilderness; and inspecting buildings, lands and shorelines, leased land, docks, and/or roads. You must include hours per week worked. OR Education: Four-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours of related course work in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled. OR Combination of Experience and Education: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position, as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. GS-07 Level Experience: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is defined as: conducting law enforcement investigations of crimes (e.g., interviewing witnesses, interrogating suspects, gathering evidence and documents); conducting patrols such as road, hunting, lake and waterway, and backcountry and wilderness; apprehending violators; and ensures compliance with laws and regulations. OR Education: One full year of graduate education with major study in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. OR Superior Academic Achievement: Successful completion of all the requirements for a bachelor's degree with Superior Academic Achievement. In order to be creditable under this provision, Superior Academic Achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled, such as that identified in Education above. Superior Academic Achievement is based on:(1) Class Standing - Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses; OR(2) Grade-Point Average (G.P.A.) - Applicants must have a grade-point average of either (a) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on your official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or (b) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.; OR(3) Honor Society Membership - Applicants may be considered eligible based on membership in one of the approved national scholastic honor societies listed by the Association of College Honor Societies (https://www.achsnatl.org/). OR Combination of Experience and Education: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. Education

Law Enforcement Commission: This position requires applicants to possess, previously held (within the past three years), or be able to possess by 09/20/2023 a valid Type II (seasonal) or higher level National Park Service (NPS) Law Enforcement Commission (or equivalent), which requires completing training from an accredited institution, which currently consists of over 650 class hours and lasts on average 17 weeks. Please visit the Association of National Park Rangers' Seasonal Law Enforcement Training Program (SLETP) for additional information on approved training courses and equivalency for commissioning.

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking.
