About the Position: This position is with the Defense Health Agency. It's located in Anniston, Alabama. The primary purpose is to perform duties encompassing all phases of the industrial hygiene program. Plan, conduct, and administer inspections, survey, and evaluate as part of a comprehensive industrial hygiene program for multiple military activities encompassing complex to moderately complex medical, research and development, and industrial processes. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation.

Duties

Conduct periodic surveys of working conditions to determine the nature and magnitude of hazardous exposure and the effectiveness of existing control measures. Provide consultation and advice to various activities on occupational health problems. Consult with the Industrial Hygiene Service Chief on surveys and studies performed to determine the control measures needed. Independently plan, conduct, and administer inspections, surveys, and evaluations as part of a comprehensive industrial hygiene program for multiple military activities. Conduct surveys and studies to determine the need for medical surveillance for employees who are routinely exposed to toxic materials, noise, or other physical hazards. Provide health education to activity personnel as a means of preventing occupational disease and their role in controlling hazards. Provide on-the-job technical guidance to on-site junior Industrial Hygienists and Industrial Hygiene Technicians in carrying out inspections, surveys and samplings. Determine the need for quantitative assessment of air contaminants, noise and other physical hazards, and ventilation systems. Prepare written exposure monitoring plans, and manages and tracks their completion, updating the plans as necessary.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment physical examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement for Industrial Hygienist: A. Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Degree must be completed by May 2018. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts). OR B. Related Degree: Bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum. Degree must be completed by May 2018. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts). OR C. Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Minimum Qualifications for the GS-09 level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience providing support in researching technical publications regarding industrial hygiene; and experience assisting in identifying and evaluating health hazards; and experience assisting with conducting baseline/annual industrial hygiene and special study surveys. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade level in the federal service (GS-7 or equivalent). OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as such as: industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or a related science. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. Minimum Qualifications for the GS-11 level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience planning and conducting evaluations of work operations involving potentially hazardous environmental conditions; and experience preparing technical reports; and experience making recommendations for controls and corrective actions of industrial hygiene problems. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or a related science. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. Minimum Qualifications for the GS-12 level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience conducting a wide variety of complex industrial hygiene surveys and assessments of chemical, physical, and biological hazards; and experience preparing comprehensive written reports of survey findings with specification recommendations for eliminating/mitigating hazards; and experience providing resolution to problems relating to safety, health and environmental controls and the various industrial hygiene programs. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade level in the federal service (GS-11 or equivalent).
