This position is part of the Office of Environmental Management - Headquarters, Department of Energy. As a Environmental Protection Specialist, you will serve as a point of coordination with NNSA and provides technical support and strategic direction for Environmental Management (EM) D&D of excess contaminated facilities on behalf of NNSA.

Duties

As an Environmental Protection Specialist, you will: Provide overall authoritative leadership and direction to pioneering environmental management/protection/sustainability development efforts designed to achieve new and innovative capabilities relative to new or expanded environmental protection and cleanup efforts or development of new technologies that impact environmental programs and national environmental initiatives. Translate broad organizational and federal environmental policies into specific policy direction and requirements to be applied across the Department. Identify and/or analyze the technical needs of programs and recommends and oversees appropriate technology development to enable or improve program execution. Apply authoritative knowledge of the latest environmental science and technology to assess and facilitate consideration of all appropriate means to achieve program goals. Use technical judgment and an understanding of national policies to recommend new or modified programs or the phasing out of old ones. Oversee interconnected environmental programs and projects to ensure effective use of resources to safely achieve environmental objectives and ensure that environmental stewardship responsibilities are met.

  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing.
  • This position has been designated as Critical-Sensitive (CS)/High Risk and requires a security clearance at the Q level. The incumbent is required to obtain and maintain this clearance level.
  • This position is included in a Bargaining Agreement.
  • Occasional travel may be required.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENT: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level. Specialized experience for this position is defined as meeting ALL of the following: Developing strategic plans that implement environmental remediation and decommissioning; and Performing physical verification of site in preparation of environmental remediation and decommissioning. "Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. CTAP/ICTAP candidates: To be considered "well qualified" you must (1) meet all of the requirements as described in this section; and 2) be rated "well-qualified", which is defined as scoring in the in Well Qualified category (or higher). You must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
