This position is located in the Kayenta Service Unit, Division of Administrative Services, Facilities Management Branch, Quarters Unit, Kayenta, Arizona. The purpose of this position is to serve as an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic for the Quarters Unit and perform a variety of functions on residential units, such as installing and recognizing the cause of faulty equipment and making repairs on various residential systems that provide for a variety of air condition functions.

Duties

This position is located at Kayenta Health Center, Division of Administrative Services, Facilities Management Branch, Quarters Unit, Kayenta, AZ. The incumbent: Maintains, installs, repairs and troubleshoots equipment such as evaporative coolers, residential refrigerators/freezer, residential ice machine, split system condensing units, and water/ice filling stations. Installs, maintains, and troubleshoots air conditioning systems within the government quarters that has a variety of air conditioning and cooling methods. Conducts routine preventive maintenance inspection of refrigeration, including evaporative coolers and residential appliance such as refrigerators and freezers and make necessary adjustments. Install, repair, and maintain a variety of domestic heating, ventilation and air condition equipment and system within the government quarters, such as propane/electric furnace, heat pump, heating/cooling split systems, hydro systems, residential exhaust fans, and energy recovery ventilation (ERV). Perform routine preventive maintenance including removing, replacing and repairing defective components, replace air filters, adjust equipment controls such as temperature sensors, and thermostats. Regularly examine and test mechanical system and equipment using specialized test equipment. Assignments include replacing defective burners, switches, fuel lines, cut off assemblies, and examine and adjust thermostats, repairing motors, blowers, pilots and ignitors, and other heating related equipment; maintaining electrical, and mechanical controls.

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below. PHYSICAL EFFORT: The employee frequently carries, lifts and moves parts and equipment weighing 50 pounds and more. Employee maneuvers parts and equipment in confined spaces, makes tests and repairs from ladders, scaffolding and other areas where parts of system are difficult to reach and require stooping, stretching, bending and kneeling for long periods of time. This position requires certification for working with refrigerants. Employee is subject to call back after normal duty hours in event of emergencies related to buildings, utilities and equipment. Work involved in these emergency situations may be in the trades of electrical, plumbing, carpentry, heating and cooling. Performs other duties as assigned which could range from simple manual labor tasks to temporary supervision of part of the facility management staff. May be required to work on gas fired furnaces in quarters and other small office buildings. WORKING CONDITIONS: The employee works inside and outside; on building roofs in hot weather and cold weather under conditions of snow and blowing dust. Much work is in crawl spaces where there is very limited head room and where most work must be done while kneeling and lying on your back. Works in areas where there is danger of electrical shock. May be required to wear uncomfortable face masks, goggles, gloves, respirators, protective clothing etc., in certain instances. Possibility of exposure to hazardous chemicals and fumes from spills and/or leaks. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: There is no specific length of training or experience required: However, applicants will be rated on the basis of their responses to the Occupational Questionnaire that you possess the competencies to perform the duties of this position without more than normal supervision, and the information contained in their resume. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence of specialized experience which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position, must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume. Maintain, operate, repair, and troubleshoot equipment of: 250 Ton Air, Cooled Liquid Chillers, Air Handlers, Humidifier Units, Variable Volume Boxes (VAV), Medical Grade Refrigerators/Freezers, Rooftop Package Unit, Split Systems, Chiller Circulation Pumps, Ice Machines, Heat Recovery Unit, Evaporator Coolers, Water Filling Station, and Morgue Refrigerator. Experience to Keep air cooled condensers and evaporators clean to insure good air circulation. Adjusts and aligns belts, door latches and hinges to insure airtight seal. Arc welds, brazes and silver solders broken pipe parts. Makes safety inspection of equipment. Services and repairs gas furnaces and heating systems. Troubleshoots, repairs or installs control circuits for refrigeration and air conditioning, air compressor, and vacuum pump. Observes fire and safety regulations, maintains assigned work area in a safe and clean manner. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
