Duties
*** Bargaining Position ***
This position serves as the Work Leader under the general supervisor of the Housekeeping Aid Supervisor and has full responsibility for the leading of the housekeeping work operations and employees within an assigned area. This position is accountable to the supervisor for the quality and quantity of work performed by this unit. As a Work Leader, this position acts within general VA instructions, standard procedures and established Facilities Management Service policies to assure efficient and economical accomplishment of work assignments within the general schedule and direction set by the supervisor.
The Work Leader is the Leader of small and large groups of unit employees. Range of groups vary from three to fifteen full-time employees. At times these numbers may be increased or decreased by temporary assigned to the unit.
The Work Leader conducts inspections of assigned work areas to assure that maximum efficiency is being achieve, VA regulations are being complied with, and that maintenance and housekeeping operations meet VA standards and health care center established procedures.
The Work Leader performs a full range of deep cleaning duties, floor stripping and refinishing, carpet shampooing , walls, lights, overhead pipes, fans, inside window washing, furnishing, etc. Performs waste management duties (accumulation and preparation for mass disposal), moving furniture, and other duties as required. Performs frequent and period inspections of all housekeeping equipment. Ensures adequate stocks of materials and equipment by inventorying and ordering those housekeeping supplies necessary within the unit.
The Work Leader sets the work pace for personnel on the basis of general work scheduled. He/she passes on instructions received from supervisor to staff under his/her lead. He/she assigns immediate tasks to be performed by individuals within the unit. He/she determines equipment and material needed for both routine and special work assignments, and maintains a reasonable stock level for all supplies.
The Work Leader reviews log books, inspection reports, etc., taking into consideration location of housekeeping work, field condition of the area, housekeeping personnel and equipment available, capabilities of the housekeeping personnel, and material on had to complete work smoothly, effectively, and within a minimum of interruption.
The Work Leader conducts training sessions for other workers by using manufacturer's recommendations, VA program guides, and related training materials as required by the supervisor.
Assures the safety and housekeeping rules are followed, i.e., assuring that limits are safe machine operation are not exceeded and that all tools are used properly and safely.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:45 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. - 12:00 a.m.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The position demands continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing. The work requires the occasional use of heavy powered cleaning equipment (e.g., wall washers, industrial type buffers) weighing over 50 pounds. The duties necessitate considerable dexterity, hand, foot, and eye coordination, and concentration as well as visual acuity to see dirt, dust and debris. Work is normally performed indoors with adequate heat, light, and ventilation. Some work may be performed outdoors where there may be exposed to varying degrees of heat and cold as well as inclement weather. PPE may be required in some circumstance as exposure to possible contagious diseases, blood and bloody secretion are inherent to this position. Care is required to avoid serious injuries (i.e., broken bones) when working on ladders, or when using 30-100-pound power equipment or handling hazardous materials.
