The employee is assigned to the Building and Maintenance Unit, Maintenance and Repair Section, Engineering Service, at the Miami VA Healthcare System (MVAHS). Employee shall be assigned maintenance and repair duties as deemed necessary by the Building Maintenance Unit Foreman.

Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to: Work from blueprints, drawings or other specifications, consulting supervisor as necessary relative to the interpretation of technical details. Responsible for following an assignment through to completion (from initial layout to final assembly) and work is subject to check during performance and on completion. Installs, repairs and replaces doors and door frames, including metal, modifies existing structure, construction new or relocating room partitions and installing the necessary bracing for support. Install hinges to doors, mortises doors for locks, base and toe mold, wainscoting, chair rails, works in Carpenter Shop operating power saws, planers and joiners, drill press and portable power tools. Installs runners, tees and angels for acoustic suspended ceilings, vinyl floor tiles and cove base and creates equipment for shipment. Repairs bulletin boards, shutters, louvers, shades and staging as well as repairs roof leaks. Work Schedule: Varies depending on the needs of the service. Position Description Title/PD#: Carpenter/PD546-04754-A Physical Requirements: Carpenters at this level, work in wood shops and at job sites. When working in a shop, grade 9 carpentry workers stand for extended periods while operating machines such as bench planters, saws and drill presses. The work requires considerable bending, kneeling and stooping. When at a job site, strenuous physical exertion is sometimes required when handling heavy and bulky materials such as sheets for plywood, framing members and other building and construction materials. Carpentry workers use manual or portable power tools for extended periods in uncomfortable positions. On-site work typically requires bending, stooping, crawling and climbing on ladders, scaffolding and rooftops. Workers may lift and move materials up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds), unassisted and occasionally lift or move heavier items with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers.
