This position is a Maintenance Mechanic, WG- 4749-9 working in Errol, New Hampshire for the R5-Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge.

Duties

As a Maintenance Mechanic your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following: Operate heavy equipment within accepted parameters (e.g., narrow quarters, such as close to buildings, drop-offs or other obstructions and challenging field conditions such as marshy, unsteady or steep surfaces). Operate attachments for all types of equipment such as tractors, bulldozers, road graders, backhoes, or other heavy equipment. Performs repairs and adjustments to equipment and attachments to equipment, this includes, but is not limited to, replacing chains and belts, cables, lubrication, filter changes, battery checks, changing dozer teeth and safety inspections. Use electrical, mechanical, carpentry, plumbing, welding, painting, or other trades skills to maintain, repair or construct a variety of buildings, structures, systems or equipment. Construct, modify, repair, building structures and related facilities such as framework, rafters, windows and doors and ensure structural soundness and appropriate appearance of all projects. Use and maintain equipment for facility grounds maintenance activities such as chain saws, lawn mowers, power generators, water pumps, and power trimmers. Perform work using common hand tools and simple power equipment such as hatchets, ladders, screwdrivers, axes, picks, tampers, hand saws, clippers, buffers, grinders, power saws, weed trimmers, low-pressure sprayers, powered push lawn mowers, chain saws, etc. Follow and carry out assignments in accordance with established oral or written directions, or established policies and practices.

  • Duties of this position require the employee to obtain and maintain a valid Class A State Commercial Drivers License (CDL) to operate various vehicles and equipment.
  • Must maintain certification on all equipment he/she operates.
  • Probationary Period: Selectees may be required to successfully complete a probationary period.

Qualifications

To be qualified candidates must meet any screen out element(s) listed at an "acceptable" level, and must achieve an average rating of at least "acceptable" on all of the elements. Only education, training, or experience acquired before the closing date will be considered. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements. Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprinting reading). Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
