Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Border Patrol at the Tucson Sector Headquarters Mission Readiness Operations Division at the Ajo Border Patrol Station. Duties

This position allows you to use your knowledge and experience with the maintenance and repair of government-owned vehicles and equipment. This position starts at a salary of $31.49 (WL-10, Step 1) to $36.76 (WL-10, Step 5) with promotion potential to $36.76 (WL-10 Step 5). As an Automotive Mechanic Leader with Customs and Border Protection, you are a valuable member of a team of professionals supporting homeland security functions. Typical work assignments include: Assisting the Automotive Mechanic Supervisor in accomplishing the maintenance, repair, and/or complete overhaul of various types of government-owned vehicles. Providing recommendations and giving technical advice on automotive repairs. Reporting the status and progress of work, including servicing and repair needs, equipment needs, and condition of equipment. Planning, assigning, directing, and reviewing work of non-supervisory employees in the same or related occupations. Providing on the job training for subordinate employees.

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.To minimally qualify for the WL-10 grade level, you must meet the Screen-Out Elements: Performing the work of the position without more than normal supervision; Safely performing required tasks related to troubleshooting and repairing a variety of automotive systems and components. To meet Screen-Out Elements, you should have experience performing the following duties: Supervising the performance of basic preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment; Performing basic preventive maintenance and vehicles and equipment; Troubleshooting, repairing and replacing braking systems; Conducting safety inspections on vehicles and equipment; Troubleshooting, repairing and replacing engine components and systems; Maintaining and ensuring subordinates perform housekeeping of work areas. Failure to meet these Screen-Out Elements will result in an ineligible rating. In addition to the experience described above, you will be evaluated on the basis of your overall level of competency (knowledge, skills, and abilities) in the following areas: Ability to provide mechanics, helpers and student aides with guidance, technical assistance and advise to determine the cause of vehicle malfunctions and repairing equipment; Ability to program on-the-job training and orientation for mechanics, helpers and student aides; Knowledge of vehicle electric and ignition systems; fuel systems; emission control systems; internal engine components; cooling systems; and engine lubrication systems; Knowledge of vehicle HVAC systems; power train systems; suspension and steering systems; and braking systems; Ability to use technical reference materials; troubleshooting and diagnosing malfunctions; using test equipment; Ability to make major and minor repairs; and prepare and maintain necessary paperwork; Knowledge of OSHA requirements; the use, dangers, handling, storage and disposal of hazardous materials and waste. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must: Meet all qualification requirements, including education if applicable to this position, subject to verification at any stage of the application process; and Meet all applicable Time in Grade requirements (current federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent grade band in the federal service) by 09/15/2023. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees.
