Duties
Duties listed are at the full performance GS-13 level.
Serve as a principal wildlife advisor and subject matter expert to the National Forests and to senior management officials concerning wildlife habitat improvement programs.
Develop the overall wildlife management program, including formulation of strategies, policies, objectives, programs, and procedures for wildlife conservation and habitat management.
Involved in planning and development of partnerships with other federal, state and local agencies, universities and colleges, conservation groups and interested corporations.
Communicate critical issues to national and regional leadership, other federal agencies, state and local agencies, and the general public.
Prepare response to congressional inquiries, audit reports, inspection reports, and public committees.
Present clear, concise, and well-structured oral presentation that address the designated issue.
Apply professional knowledge to complex and comprehensive wildlife programs and issues.
Requirements
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.

- The work is primarily sedentary in nature, requiring no special physical demands. It may involve some walking, bending, or carrying of light items.
- The incumbent may visit field sites to perform duties associated with wildlife program management, requiring multi-day trips and walking in rough, uneven terrain.

Basic Requirement: GS-0486
Degree: Biological Science that included:
At least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences.
At least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects (Excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate.); and
At least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology;
OR
Combination of education and experience: equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience equivalent to that listed below.
Specialized Experience Requirement:
For the GS-12 Grade Level:One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-11 level. Specialized experience is defined as one or more of the following: Studying, planning, and proposing wildlife management activities, and coordinating and implementing approved resource management plans such as habitat improvement projects; planning and conducting studies/projects, follow-up investigations, and evaluations, and recommending preventative or mitigative actions based on these studies; OR preparing environmental assessments based on analysis of study findings on the effects of management activities on wildlife resources.
For the GS-13 Grade Level: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as one or more of the following: Serving as a wildlife program manager or technical expert responsible for coordinating and providing leadership in wildlife resource management with other resource uses such as range, timber, recreation, and/or watershed; developing and implementing programs for monitoring the effects of ongoing and proposed management activities on wildlife resources to meet regional and state standards; OR designing and implementing complex studies to evaluate the effectiveness of wildlife resource measures and provided technical advice, training, and assistance to federal, state, and/or local agencies in a multi-state area.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
