This Supervisory Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) position is located in the Nursing Operation service at the Chicago, IL VA Medical Center. This is a temporary promotion NTE 1 year appointment. The selectee will return to the previously held position, maybe extended without further competition with the approval of the Medical Center Director at the selectee's duty location of record, or maybe converted to a permanent appointment without further competition.

Duties

The Supervisory Registered Respiratory Therapists responsible for sifts within the service and serves as a mentor to other staff. The services are performed in accordance with the guidelines established by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC), American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC), and policies and procedures of the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center. Duties include: Assists with daily chart audit reviews related to the performance improvement activities of the respiratory department. Evaluates patients placed on respiratory equipment and assists the physician and staff therapist as needed. Assists with a wide variety of respiratory therapy procedures and techniques including the functioning characteristics of respiratory therapy equipment in order to administer mechanical ventilatory support to patients with artificial airways and other medical problems, Performs artificial airway care and maintenance, conducts diagnostic respiratory therapy tests, calibrates various respiratory therapy equipment, and instructs others in the performance of respiratory therapy procedures and techniques. Works primarily in patient care areas and has extensive interaction with patients, staff, physician's family members and visitors. Assists with patient and family education and rationale relating to respiratory therapy treatments including assessments, orientation, goals, problems, sfety issues, patient rights nd responsibilities, etc., nd provides re-instruction to the patient as needed. Assists with development of plans and programs designed to improve respiratory care. Conducts ongoing reviews to ensure quality of work; accurate and timely delivery of respiratory therapy; provides guidance to staff members including changes in policies nd procedures; distributes and balances workload; creates and maintains employee work schedules; provides orientation an on-the-job training; and acts as a liaison between the Respiratory Service Chief and staff to resolve day to day conflicts. Communicates and works with nurses, physicians, etc., for service of critical care, emergency room, operating room, and invasive monitoring regarding Respiratory Care and Diagnostic activities in these areas. Attends or sends a surrogate to critical care committee meetings as assigned. Assures policy and procedures are current, accurate and reviewed by all staff. Performs other studies as requested and assigned. Work Schedule: 8:00AM to 4:30PM. Maybe required to on-call rotation to include nights, holidays, and weekends. Qualifications

Creditable Experience: Experience is only creditable if credentialed as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT), the experience is in respiratory care, pulmonary function testing or polysomnography and directly related to the position being filled. To be creditable, the candidates experience must have demonstrated the use of knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA) associated with current practice in paid employment as a RRT. Basic Requirements - GS-5 grade level: The following are the basic requirements and qualifications for this position: English Language Proficiency Education: Successful completion of a respiratory care program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) or its successor. Transcripts Required. Licensure: Must possess and maintain for the duration of employment a full, current and unrestricted license from a state to practice as a Registered Respiratory Therapist. Copy of license required. Credential: Must possess and maintain for the duration of employment a valid current, unrestricted credential as a Registered Respiratory Therapist from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC). Copy of credential required. In addition, to meeting the basic requirements stated above, the following qualifications criteria must be met in order to qualify at the GS-13 grade level as a Supervisory Registered Respiratory Therapist. Experience, Licensure and Credential: Candidates MUST have. One year of creditable experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level demonstrating the clinical competencies described at that level. Hold an active license and RRT credential. In addition to the experience, licensure and credential above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Ability to plan and assist in the establishment of a completely integrated respiratory care program. Ability to recommend improvements based on evaluation of facility operations. Ability to supervise RRT employees. Ability to manage the fiscal aspects of the functions supervised. Physical Requirements: Work is performed primarily in patient care areas. Extensive interaction with patients, staff, physicians, family members, and visitors involved. Moving equipment and supplies, lifting, bending, stooping, nd possible exposure to body fluid is involved. This position has been evaluated as a Level 1 in accordance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) definition of occupations exposure to blood and potentially infectious body fluids. Work Environment: The Respiratory Therapist will on a regular and recurring bases be exposed to health risks which will require the use of personal protective equipment in the course of duties. Unpleasant sites and odors are associated with the practice of respiratory therapy in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.
