Duties

Conduct inspections of different types of facilities to ensure compliance with Department of the Army regulations, Department of Defense and OSHA standards, and IMCOM and local regulations. Perform fire prevention inspections of airfields to include aircraft hangers, aprons, ammunition storage areas, movements of ammunition, and fuel storage areas. Conduct an information distribution program concerning a variety of fire prevention practices with regard to the particular client's needs. Serve as a safety officer at the scene of a fire or other types of emergencies. Conduct continuous fire prevention classes and training at six on-post schools and nine major child and youth services facilities. When on a 24-hour shift, employee will respond to emergencies as a member of a firefighting crew and will assist in fire suppression activities as required. Reviews plans and blue prints for new construction and renovations. Conduct visual inspections and quality assurance of fixed fire protection equipment to ensure equipment is in correct operational condition. Serve as a safety officer at the scene of a fire or other types of emergencies.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position requires the incumbent to wear the prescribed uniform and/or personal protective equipment while on duty.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Required to work 60 hours per week, which includes at least one 24-hour shift, and may include working weekends and holidays.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position requires the incumbent to conform to the requirements set-forth in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1500, Fire Department Occupational Health and Safety Program.
  • This position requires participation in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.

  • This position may require the employee to work under adverse environmental conditions. May be subject to dense smoke, flames, extreme heat, cold, dust, water, and possible explosions as well as exposure to toxic fumes and materials.
  • Incumbent must be able to maintain necessary alertness, self-control, and emotional stability under emergency conditions.
  • Incumbent will be required to work 60 hours per week (120 hours per pay period) which includes at least one 24-hour shift and may include working weekends and holidays.
  • Occasional Travel required (not more than 5%).

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). Selective Placement Factor for GS-08: Required Certificates - You MUST submit copies of the ten (10) required certifications with your application or you will be rated ineligible: (1) Firefighter I, (2) Firefighter II, (3) Fire Instructor I, (4) Fire Inspector I, (5) Fire Inspector II, (6) HAZMAT Awareness, (7) HAZMAT Operations, (8) Emergency Medical Technician (Kansas or Nationally Registered), (9) Fire and Life Safety Educator I, and (10) Fire and Life Safety Educator II. FIREFIGHTER SECONDARY RETIREMENT COVERAGE: This position is covered as a secondary firefighter position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336(c)(CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412(d) (FERS) when it is filled by an individual who transfers directly from a primary or another secondary firefighting position with no break in service as a firefighter to this position. Firefighter retirement coverage of the selectee depends upon his or her individual work history.
