This position is located in the Maintenance and Repair Unit, Engineering Section of Facilities Management Service Line (FMS) of the Corporal Michael J. Crescenz VA Medical Center (CMC V AMC) and reports to the Maintenance Supervisor. The incumbent performs maintenance, repairs, applications and installations associated with the painting trade throughout the medical center and may be required to work at both the Heinz and University Drive campuses.
Duties
The painter performs all duties associated with the application, maintenance, and repair of all types of finishes, including special finishing techniques such as marbling and graining, by using coating materials that are prepared in special and common way and by applying coating techniques that ensure surfaces have a smooth textured and decorative appearance and meet thickness and level requirements.
As the Painter, the incumbent's duties include, but are not limited to:
Interprets and follows mixing, tinting and application directions and surface preparation instructions.
Applies coverings on plastered walls, metal and wood surfaces, roads, parking lots, furniture, small patching needs and equipment, after proper surface preparation, to insure good adhesion.
Apply paint to equipment, furniture, walls, doors, and windows, ceiling, etc. throughout the medical center.
Apply surface coatings using acceptable trade devices such as those designed to give special effects, for example: brushes, rollers, spray guns and graining devices.
Determine the methods, techniques, devices and materials that are best suited to the surface finish required.
Prepare coating materials by tinting, toning, matching, blending and mixing various activities.
Plan and layout the job assigned, select materials, tools and techniques needed and complete work with minimum guidance.
Install, patch, and repair vinyl wall covering.
Determine materials, tools and techniques needed for vinyl wall covering assignments.
Match, tint, tone and blend coating materials and combine agent with coating materials such as catalysts, drying agents and retardants.

Physical Requirements: The incumbent prepares, and coats surfaces from ladders, scaffolds and platforms, and where the surfaces to be coated are in cramped and hard-to-reach places. Most work requires the patient to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequent lifting, carrying, and setting up materials and equipment that weigh up to 10 pounds, and occasionally 40 pounds or over occurs.
He/she is standing or walking much of the time and must be in good overall physical condition. Physical capability to regularly walk long distances, dexterity and accurate eye-hand coordination, and corrected 20/20 vision and accurate color perception are required.
