About the Position: Serves as a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist assigned to the Garrison, performs functions necessary to execute a Command-wide safety and occupational health program. Conducts program surveys and inspections.

Duties

Conducts verbal entrance and exit briefing with the directors and senior operations management officials prior to and after the survey and inspection. Advises senior level officials on the status of implementation of safety and occupational health program requirements and recommends actions needed to improve the effectiveness of the local program. Determines training needs through analysis of accident experience data, during surveys and inspection, and/or review of regulatory material. Investigates and/or assists investigation of serious accidents involving fatalities and significant damage to equipment and property.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 15% of the time
  • Incumbent must complete the CP-12 Level 1 skills outlined in the 0018 job series master training plan and be awarded the CP-12 Safety and Occupational Health Professional Certificate within 2 years from hire date.

GS-11: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting with the implementation of safety and occupational health standards regulations/procedures for an organization in areas such as: Applying safety and occupational health laws, regulations, principles, theories, practices, and procedures to advise on or resolve technical matters dealing with occupational safety and health requirements, assisting with inspections/surveying workplaces, processes, products, or other systems to control or eliminate hazards, reviewing new and existing jobs, processes, products, or other systems to determine the existence, severity, probability, and outcome of hazards.. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree with a major study in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS- 09). GS-12: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting with the management of a safety or occupational health program elements in areas such as: Implementing safety and occupational health laws, regulations, principles, theories, practices, and procedures to advise on or resolve technical matters dealing with occupational safety and health requirements, analyzing or evaluating new and existing jobs, processes, products, or other systems to determine the existence, severity, probability, and outcome of hazards, inspecting or surveying workplaces, processes, products, or other systems for compliance with established safety and occupational health policies or standards and to identify potential new hazards, training of workers, supervisors, managers, or other safety and occupational health personnel in safety or occupational health subjects. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11).
