The Pittsburgh VA Dental Lab Technician for our H.J. Heinz campus. The Dental Lab Technician designs and fabricates complex dental or dental biocompatible implant appliances. This involves working with Oral Surgeon, Prosthodontist, or General Dentist to develop the design of the appliance, personally fabricating or overseeing the fabrication of the appliance, and resolving problems with fabrication.

Duties

Duties for the GS-08 level include but are not limited to: Fabrication of full arch and full mouth fixed oral-maxillofacial prostheses. A marginal fit should be consistently impeccable and that the biomechanical fit and tolerance of al prostheses should be extremely passive to deliver as little stress to the biomechanical interface as possible. Fabrication of fixed prostheses, whether tooth or implant borne to maximze success especially in situations where compromised. In these cases the technician is able to design prostheses to maximize retention and resistance form for long term. Fabrication of multi-unit full arch implant bars, utilizing either lost was of CAD technology ensuring passive fit and minimal strain/stress to the implants. Fabrication of implant casts utilizing soft tissue moulage to replicate soft tissue structures. Intimately involved in the fabrication of maxillofacial prostheses including post-surgical obturators and speech appliances. Fabrication of sleep apnea appliances. Fabrication of single CAD-CAM crowns. Design and milling of complex multi-unit CAD-CAM restorations utilizing multiple ceramics including feldspathic an lithium di=silicat3e restorations. Custom chairside characterization of prosthesis. Perform chairside or lab side instruction and demonstration to staff on laboratory materials and techniques. This includes three dimensional model demonstration when necessary. Scanning of complex multi-unit restorations for CAD-CAM milling. Fabrication of prosthesis including precision attachments such as intra-coronal attachments for conventional crown and bridge as well as precision attachments within implant bars and implant fixed prostheses. Qualifying specialized experience includes use of dental laboratory material such as impression materials, plasters, stones, hydrocolloids, waxes, metals, acrylics, porcelain, and similar materials; use of laboratory equipment such as hand tools, dental lathes, engines, and hand pieces, furnaces, casting machines, presses, flasks, and related equipment; use of precision instruments such as articulators, surveyors, and microanalyzers; and construction of dental prosthetic appliances. Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/15/2023. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-08 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-07. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education s described below: General Experience: Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, OR, experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Specialized Experience: In addition to the general experience above, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-07 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but not limited to the following: Use of dental laboratory material such as impression materials, plasters, stones, hydrocolloids, waxes, metals acrylics, porcelain, and similar materials. Use of laboratory equipment such as hand tools, dental lathes, engines, and hand pieces, furnaces, casting machines, presses, flasks, and related equipment. Use of precision instruments such as articulates, surveyors, and microanalyzers. Construction of dental prosthetic appliances. . OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have: GS-8 Education of 1-full year of graduate level education or superior academic achievement. . OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the level. Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements for the grade levels specified in the table, and may be computed by first determining the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determining the applicant's education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; and then adding the two percentages. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level.
