Performs major maintenance repairs to large gasoline and diesel engines, four-cylinder gasoline tractor engines, and small engines of all types. Responsible for repair and maintenance of all portable engine powered equipment. Assists journeyman trades such as pipefitter, carpenter, electrician, etc.as determined by Maintenance & Operation leadership.
Duties
The duties of the Automotive Worker (Maintenance Worker) includes but is not limited to:
AUTOMOTIVE/ENGINE MAINTENANCE & REPAIR - 65%
Performs major repairs to large gasoline and diesel engines, four-cylinder gasoline tractor engines, and small engines of all types.
Installs ignition and electrical system components and makes other necessary repairs.
Performs preventive and general maintenance/repairs on VA owned vehicles and equipment (i.e. changing oil, tires, anti-freeze, etc.)
Services tractors, drain and change lubricant in crankcase, differentials, transmission.
Lubricates tractors and replace engine oil filters and air filters.
Checks fluid levels in brake and hydraulic systems reservoirs.
Repairs tires, replaces accessories, and be skilled in the use of battery tester and charger and the tools necessary to complete these and other assignments.
Checks, adjusts and replaces/or repairs components such as spark plugs, points, condensers, carburetors, fan belts, hoses, exhaust systems.
Repairs and maintains all portable engine powered equipment (i.e. tractors, lawn mowers, skid-steer loader, weed-eater, chain saw, power sprayer, salt spreader, concrete mixer, 3KW generator, truck-mounted snow blade)
In the absence of major duties as auto mechanic, the incumbent may be asked to drive vehicles such as trucks, vans and sedans; and perform grounds maintenance duties.
MAINTENANCE & OPERATIONS ASSISTANCE - 35%
Assists journeyman trades such as pipefitter, carpenter, electrician, etc.
Performs a variety of manual labor tasks such as loading and unloading equipment and supplies.
Utilizes blueprints, sketches, specification manuals, and work orders to select the proper size and type of materials so as to lay out, fabricate, and make repairs to equipment components and parts to specified dimensions.
Determines the type of machines and tools to use and the proper sequence of operation for fabrication and repairs.
Performs acetylene, electric, MIG and TIG welding on a wide variety of items (i.e. water, steam, gas, and piping, medical vacuum, medical air & oxygen, dental air compressors/vacuum systems, boilers, tank parts, grounds, dietetic, and motor vehicle equipment).
Utilizes bench lathes, grinding and seating equipment, clutch pilot and gear puller tools, and common hand tools.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00am to 3:30pm

SCREEN-OUT REQUIREMENT. A current, valid state issued Driver's License is required for this position. Individuals required to operate a Government-owned or -leased motor vehicle to properly carry out their assigned duties must be properly screened during the recruitment and onboarding process. Have a safe driving record, and
Demonstrate that they are medically qualified to operate the appropriate motor vehicle safely.

Physical Requirements: The work requires a high degree of physical endurance to withstand strain caused by vibration of equipment operated. Muscular effort and coordination are required in driving and manipulating the controls of the equipment. The incumbent is required to stand, stoop and bend, stretch, and work in uncomfortable positions. They may frequently lift and carry heavy items weighing 40 pounds and, occasionally, objects weighing over 50 pounds. Employee may be exposed to noise levels exceeding 85dBA for up to 8 hours per day. This exposure may adversely affect hearing. The wearing of ear protective devices while operating all combustion engine-powered grounds maintenance equipment is mandatory, as is participation in the Hearing Conservation Program. Employee must be able to hear while wearing ear protection at a level to safely perform assigned duties.
Working Conditions: Will usually work indoors; however, they may be required to make repairs or do general duties outdoors under all kinds of weather conditions. The work will be dirty and on occasion handling hot materials. Dust and grease are always present. The incumbent must always use proper PPE when handling automobile fluids and battery acids.
