About the Position: As an Animal Health Technician (Equine) will be responsible for performing or assisting with complicated technical procedures involving equine diagnostic imaging, surgery, medicine, critical or general care, or any combination of veterinary support work in support of the Veterinary Services equine mission under the direction of a licensed veterinarian.
Duties
Perform and record monthly stable inspections; estimate weights of Military Working Equines and administer preventive medical products, to include vaccinations and other supplements.
Coordinate with and aid Animal Care Specialists (68Ts) with monthly and quarterly veterinary specific training.
Analyze and evaluate environmental sanitation programs for the herd, quarantines, when necessary, conditions, isolates, vaccinates and assists in implementing preventive medicine procedures for the Caisson Herd.
Assist the Ft. Myer branch veterinarian with examinations, emergencies, and routine procedures.
Perform and assist various patient exams for Military Working Equines to include, but not limited to, joint injections, lameness exams, pre-purchase examinations, diagnostic imaging, colic workups, laceration and wound repairs, etc.
Administer preanesthetic and IV anesthetic induction agents as directed by veterinarian.
Oversee the 3rd US Infantry Regiment 68T personnel, the treatment room and medical logistics for the equine mission.
Ensure the organization's strategic plan, mission, vision, and values are communicated, and integrated into the strategies, goals, objectives, work plans, and work products and services.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Pre-employment and annual physicals while in the position.
- Must possess a valid State-issued driver's license. Must obtain and maintain a valid Government driver's license in order to operate Government vehicles to drive to various sites.
- Must possess a current Licensed Veterinary Technician, Certified Veterinary Technician, Registered Veterinary Technician or equivalent licensure; must maintain while in the position. (Submit with application)
- May be required to work other than normal duty hours which may include weekends, holidays, and/or on-call duty hours.
- Use of protective clothing, safety devices and equipment required.
- Position may require employee to work under adverse environmental conditions.

- This is a drug testing position - must pass urinalysis testing as required prior to appointment and periodically thereafter. Must sign DA Form 5019-R.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Specialized Experience:
One year of specialized experience which includes direct work with equine on a farm or ranch; providing veterinary technical support to the veterinarians who work with equine animals (which may include examining, identifying, collecting specimens, vaccination, evaluation of animals); maintaining equine animal medical records; handling military working equine (to include medication, rehabilitation, equine physical therapy, weighing, grooming, ensuring standard care). This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).

Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: zoology, biology, chemistry, or agricultural subjects. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-08).
