You will serve as a Supv Meteorologist in the Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center (FNMOC), Monterey CA.
Duties
You will plan, design, and implement the operational configuration of complex significant new data assimilation and numerical modeling capabilities and automated systems.
You will facilitate the validation and verification of METOC numerical analysis and forecast products through qualitative and quantitative comparison to all relevant observations.
You will brief VIPs on FNMOC?s role in the national effort in numerical model computing including senior Agency and DOD decision makers.
You will present scientific results in a national public forum or a peer-reviewed publication.
You will write and justify proposals for contract support.
You will write contracting documentation according to the Federal Acquisition Regulations and Navy contracting rules and procedures.
You will serve as one of the senior technical advisors and consultant in areas of meteorology, physical oceanography or other specialized physical science fields.
You will recommend awards, bonuses and within-grade increases for civilian employees.
You will make selections for nonsupervisory positions and recommend selection for supervisory positions.
You will request promotions of subordinates.
You will schedule and approve leave
You will identify the development and training needs of employees and arrange for the needed development training.
You will determine whether work performed by contractors meet the standards required for authorization of payment.
You will give advice, counsel, or instruction to employees on both work and administrative matters.

- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

- This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
Qualifications
In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
Experience with meteorology and oceanography (METOC) satellites, their sensors, the algorithms used to produce environmental estimates and the METOC products derived from satellite data.
Experience in theoretical meteorology, including the dynamics of the atmosphere, mesoscale meteorology and the application of computer methods of numerical weather analysis and prediction.
Experience with advanced programming language such as Python, software and database configuration management and visualization of large scientific data sets.
Experience with software engineering techniques as applied to the development and maintenance of automated, real-time systems.
Experience communicating orally and in writing with public speaking, technical writing, and presenting briefings to manager.
Experience with Federal Acquisition Regulations and Navy contracting rules and procedures
Mastery knowledge of management skills such as leadership, interpersonal skills, customer service, decision making, flexibility, organizational awareness, team building, problem solving, and performance evaluation sufficient to ensure the effective working of a team.
Mastery of theories, methods, and techniques of professional meteorology and the performance of tactical decision aids.
Mastery knowledge of air-sea interaction theory as it applies to satellite remote sensing and data assimilation.
Mastery training in project management practices sufficient to ensure successful completion of all stages of a project, including initiating, planning, executing, controlling, and closing the project.

Basic Requirements:
- Degree: meteorology, atmospheric science, or other natural science major that included:
- At least 24 semester (36 quarter) hours of credit in meteorology/atmospheric science including a minimum of:
- Six semester hours of atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics;*
- Six semester hours of analysis and prediction of weather systems (synoptic/mesoscale);
- Three semester hours of physical meteorology; and
- Two semester hours of remote sensing of the atmosphere and/or instrumentation.
- Six semester hours of physics, with at least one course that includes laboratory sessions.*
- Three semester hours of ordinary differential equations.*
- At least nine semester hours of course work appropriate for a physical science major in any combination of three or more of the following: physical hydrology, statistics, chemistry, physical oceanography, physical climatology, radiative transfer, aeronomy, advanced thermodynamics, advanced electricity and magnetism, light and optics, and computer science.
* There is a prerequisite or corequisite of calculus for course work in atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics, physics, and differential equations. Calculus courses must be appropriate for a physical science major.
