The Marion VA Medical Center is currently seeking a Medical Technician for the Pathology and Laboratory Service.
Duties
The incumbent serves as a generalist in medical technology with responsibility for performing procedures in the areas of chemistry (including special chemistry and toxicology), hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, immunology, immunohematology (blood banking), microbiology, and specimen procurement and processing. The ? incumbent at this level develops, performs, evaluates, interprets, correlates, and validates the accuracy of laboratory procedures and results.Duties include but are not limited to:
Hematology- Operates instrumentation that performs blood cell testing with the newest methodologies which include impedance testing, flow cytometry,
Urinalysis- Operates instrumentation for semi-quantitative and quantitative measurements of chemical and cellular constituents in urine specimens.
Coagulation- Operates instrumentation for the determination of prothrombin time for warfrin monitoring, activated partial . thromboplastin time, and d-dimer testing.
Chemistry/Special Chemistry- Operates a variety of complex instrumentation. The technician must have the necessary skills to program and troubleshoot the instrumentation. The technician must be responsible for the operation of the analyzers to include calibrations, preventative maintenance, quality control test performance, and proficiency testing.
Microbiology- The technician is responsible for the setup of cultures, staining of specimens, and isolation of bacteria.
lmmunohematology (Blood Bank}- Performs routine Blood Bank testing such as ABO/Rh, antibody screening, antibody identification, and Direct Coombs testing.
Maintains and documents the laboratory facilities and equipment and controls supplies.
Determines compliance with safety requirements establishes inventory and equipment maintenance requirements and maintains appropriate inventories and maintenance schedules.
Maintains laboratory stock and orders materials, as needed.
Maintains laboratory in a clean and safe condition according to agency or accreditation ?requirements.
Calibrates and maintains laboratory instrumentation on timely intervals so as to minimize breakdown and delay of procedures.
Maintains and controls laboratory records. Incumbent is responsible for presenting the data to the supervisor in a logical and systematic fashion.
Records Information pertaining to the storage of specimens or reagents and completes appropriate tracking/inventory system Information.
Work Schedule: 7am-3:30 pm OR 3:30pm -12am, weekends, holidays, and on-call

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/29/2023.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-7 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-6. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.

Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR): The Medical Technician Series, 0645 has an IOR. In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following requirement.One year of specialized experience at the next lower grade. Specialized experience includes: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. ORSuccessful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position to be filled.You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-6 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled.. OR,
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed one full year of progressively higher level graduate education in a related field that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond a 4 year degree.

Physical Requirements: The work requires manual dexterity and exceptional hand/eye coordination, some physical exertion, such as regular and recurring walking, bending, sitting over a microscope and concentrate for long periods of time while reading specimens and to stand for several consecutive hours during the preparation of specimens. In many situations the duration of the activity (such as most of a workday) contributes to the arduous nature of the job. Position requires lifting of reagent containers weighing up to 35 pounds.
