Duties
The incumbent is responsible for various areas of the Pharmacy, e.g., Outpatient Pharmacy, Inpatient Pharmacy, Telephone Care, various storage areas, offices, and patient care areas. The function is under the supervision of the Outpatient Pharmacy Supervisor or a registered pharmacist in the absence of a supervisor. The CITC Pharmacy Technician assists the pharmacist in all daily tasks concerning ,non-VA prescribed prescriptions, including, but not limited to, prescription entry, reviewing formulary status of medications, ensuring all required Prior Authorization Drug Request (PADR) information is received from the external provider before providing to the pharmacist for clinical review, performing electronic health record review and communication to external medical offices, and assist the Pharmacy department in administrative duties as assigned including patient and health care professional contact, data collection and analysis, entry of information into patient databases, chart review and drug information.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency. Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Certification. Pharmacy Technicians in the VHA above the GS-06 grade level are required to have a certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), Verify Certification (ptcb.org).
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
In addition to the basic requirements, the below qualification requirements must be met at the grade in which you are applying.
Grade Determination:
For the GS-07, Pharmacy Control Substance Technician you must have at least one year experience at the next lower grade and must fully meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) of the lower grade. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
*Ability to evaluate, analyze workflow, and coordinate work activities.
Ability to independently gather, evaluate, and analyze data to generate reports and/or for other projects/statistical purposes.
Knowledge of pharmacy policies and procedures sufficient to train and orient new employees and other staff.
Comprehensive knowledge of the operation and care of specialized pharmaceutical equipment.
Comprehensive knowledge of the procurement and formulary process.
Comprehensive knowledge of investigational drug policies and procedures.
Comprehensive knowledge of controlled substance policies and procedures, and the ability to identify and investigate discrepancies in these policies and procedures.
Comprehensive knowledge of, and ability to, analyze data in VA information systems.
Assignment: For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. Pharmacy technicians at this grade level may be assigned as a supervisor; lead technician in a particular area of the pharmacy; a controlled substance technician; an investigational drug technician; a procurement/inventory management technician; a clinical pharmacy technician; or similar assignment with this level of complexity. The GS-7 level is for select, complex pharmacy technician positions, as established by the health care facility.

The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-07.
Physical Requirements: The work involves considerable walking, bending, standing, and stooping. Packages lifted occasionally weigh up to 40 pounds. Dexterity is required for the operation of Pharmacy equipment.
