These positions are located in the Transportation and Grounds Service of the VA Medical Centers in Tuskegee, AL and Columbus, GA.

Duties

Transporting Veterans and other passengers safely and efficiently; Transporting Veterans to and from appointments; Driving passenger sedans, vans, and buses; Driving heavy duty trucks with GVWR not exceeding 23,999; Operating air, manual, power brakes, and power steering; Completing preventative maintenance on vehicles; Documenting information according to transportation policies and procedures; Operating vehicles using flex-fuel, gasoline, and diesel and fueling vehicles properly; Checking fluid levels, taking cars for oil changes, washing vehicles, and transporting vehicles for repairs/maintenance; Maintaining records pertaining to each trip and submitting paperwork to the Transportation Office in a timely manner; Transporting patients in a way that minimizes disturbance to illness/injury and ensuring maximum comfort, preventing shock, allowing freedom of breathing, and avoiding further danger to patient; Adhering to laws and traffic regulations; Loading and unloading patients in a safe manner; Providing timely and courteous customer service; Listening to concerns, providing information, and/or directing customers for assistance; Performing related duties as required. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, rotating schedule. Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized.

This position requires a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement. Please do not submit your driver's license with this application. Your license will be verified at interview. ~AND~ The ability to perform the duties of the Motor Vehicle Operator without more than normal supervision. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The Motor Vehicle Operator must occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull objects when delivering the mail from one campus to the other. Exertion is occasional and no more than 10 pounds of force is required. The Operator sits to drive and walk and stands during trips. Alertness and good judgment are always practiced ensuring a safe trip for Veterans. The Motor Vehicle Operator can maneuver and back-up the longer and heavier vehicles. Physical exertion is used when assisting patients into and out of the vehicle, while stooping, bending, and lifting patients. The Operator must also be able to load and assist wheelchair patients, often without assistance. Work is performed outside in all kinds of weather, and driving occurs in all types of traffic, on highways, and over complicated road and interchange systems. Gas and oil fumes are present in both operation and repair of equipment. The Motor Vehicle Operator is subject to cuts and bruises when loading and unloading items for transport from the mailroom. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
