Duties

Serves as the sole Orthotist-Prosthetist in the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) and administers, supervises and provides clinical and laboratory prosthetic and orthotic devices to disabled inmates locally and nationwide. Responsible for maintaining the accreditation of the laboratory, regulation compliance through Joint Commission and the American Correctional Association. Provides technical and administrative advice to institutions nationwide regarding appropriate management of incarcerated patients with prosthetic or orthotic limbs. Communicates and interacts with physicians, allied health professionals, patients and caregivers in various interdisciplinary clinical settings, rehabilitation medicine, orthopedics, neurosurgery, vascular care, podiatry, oncology, etc., as a subject matter expert to develop the orthotic and/or prosthetic treatment plan. Designs and fits a wide variety of prostheses to the upper and lower extremities. Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staff correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.

Qualifications

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following qualification requirements. Qualifying experience and training may have been acquired in automotive, electronic, furniture, garment, or woodworking shops or factories, in a hospital or clinical setting, or in the Armed Forces as a medic or mechanic. All applicants must have the ability to: Deal with patients' orthotic or prosthetic needs while recognizing their emotional and mental outlook and attitudes; Accept responsibility as participating members of the health care team, be aware of the ethical considerations present and the need to adhere to medical ethical practices in all their relationships; and Work with professionals and nonprofessionals, and recognize the contribution of each in attaining the objectives of the treatment plan prescribed by a physician or developed by a clinical team. Experience: You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in federal service that provided a solid background of: The theories and principles of orthotics or prosthetics; The use of hand and power tools for the development or fabrication of orthotic or prosthetic devices and appliances; The technology of materials commonly used in orthotic or prosthetic appliances; and The measurement of patients, the fabrication and fitting of orthoses or prostheses from prescriptions according to recognized and accepted techniques. To be creditable, this experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular qualifications to perform successfully the duties of the position, and must be in or related to the position to be filled. Some examples of this qualifying experience are: Experience in assessing patients that require prosthetic/orthotic devices. Experience/knowledge of materials utilized in the manufacturing of prosthetic/orthotic materials such as plastics, composites, metals and other materials commonly using fabrication. Experience re-assessing the progress of patients using prosthetic/orthotic devices and adjust devices to fit the need of the patient care plan. If applicable, credit will be given for paid and unpaid experience. To receive proper credit, you must show the actual time (such as number of hours worked per week) spent in the activities. **Your eligibility for consideration will be based on your responses to the questions in the application.**
