The Medical Technician Lead works in the processing and blood drawing sections of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Section directing the operations of GS02, GS03, GS04 and GS05 Medical Technicians and Student Medical Laboratory Aids.
Duties
MAJOR DUTIES:
Responsible for directing and monitoring the overall workflow of the specimen processing areas to assure that the work Is done in the most efficient manner to minimize turnaround time for laboratory tests.
Prepares and adds necessary preservatives to reference laboratory specimens.
Keeps updated on test methodologies used in the clinical laboratory and is familiar with how tests are run and the instrumentation used.
Answers queries from physicians, nurses and other hospital staff regarding test requirements, processing instructions, test order status. Routes call to the proper section of the lab.
Resolves all problems and discrepancies concerning patient or specimen identification, lost or improperly drawn specimens, and takes appropriate action to resolve the problem (i.e. redraw the specimen, notify the physician, complete a lab incident report form, etc.)
Uses VISTA and CPRS to query patient demographics, laboratory test requests, test order status and test descriptions. Uses the computer to order, delete or amend laboratory tests, build collection lists, print collection lists and labels, and log in collections of specimens.
Maintains liaison with reference laboratories and ensures all references tests are collected, processed and shipped correctly. Ensures receipt of reference lab test results and entry of reference lab results by qualified personnel.
Assist the Receiving Supervisor in the interviewing and selection of personnel for vacant positions within the Receiving and Blood Drawing Sections of the Lab.
Coordinates all training of Medical Laboratory Aids and Medical Technicians who work in the processing sections. This will include lab safety, data entry for VA and IJMC patients, and specimen processing and shipping.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/15/2023.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-05 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-04. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service.
An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled.. Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a Bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position to be filled. ~ OR,
Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond Bachelor's Degree .

Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. Typically, the person in this position may sit comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending and carrying of light items like papers or books. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.
