This position is for a Maintenance Mechanic in the Engineering Service at the Dublin VA Medical Center. This position is covered by AFGE bargaining unit. Per the AFGE Master Agreement, the Area of Consideration will be: 1st Area of Consideration: Current permanent Facility (including satellites) employees. 2nd Area of Consideration: Current permanent VA employees (including VEOA Status). 3rd Area of Consideration: All other Status candidates.

Duties

Major duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following: Responsible for maintenance and repair, preventive maintenance and completing work orders in a timely manner. Performs daily rounds or all areas assigned and examines the nursing logbooks, and talks with nurses and other professional staff concerning current problems. Perform repairs to doors, walls, ceilings, floors, partitions, hand rails, windows, built-in cabinets, furniture, interior signage, wall hangings, and staircases where accuracy, spacing, and fit are essential and structural soundness or appearance are important. Perform repairs of various types of plumbing fixtures and fittings. Performs repairs to painted surfaces by refinishing or painting the interior and/or exterior of buildings and other surfaces. Use various grits of sandpaper, various types of wood, metals, gypsum based wallboard and plaster materials used for filling voids, cracks, damaged areas and holes. Use ladders, scaffold, lift trucks and operate electric scooters, motor vehicles and equipment under various conditions in accordance with work requirements. Work Schedule: Monday to Friday 07:00 AM to 03:30 PM Compressed/Flexible Schedule: Available. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/15/2023. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work is performed from ladders, platforms, under equipment, in crawlspaces, and in hard to reach locations. Is required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, crawl and work in uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries, pushes and pulls items. May occasionally be required to lift or move 50 pounds or more in a safe manner. Work is accomplished indoors and outdoors. Incumbent will be exposed to the elements and is required to wear appropriate working and safety apparel. May work with or near hazardous substances such as asbestos. Is expected to employ prescribed safety precautions depending upon the tasks and nature of the job at the time. Is subject to dirt, dust, paint, lubricants, solvents, and certain other chemical substances used for maintenance purposes. Hazards of cuts, bruises, falls, electrical shock, irritating noises, heat and cold and potential eye contamination are present. Will use ladders, scaffold, lift trucks and operate electric scooters, motor vehicles and equipment under various conditions in accordance with work requirements.
