The role is responsible for functioning as the Engineering Equipment Supervisor for Engineering Service. The work performed by the shop is critical to the beautifiication and upkeep of the medical center. This position will be operating at the main VA campus in Biloxi, MS, but may be required from time to time to perform services at any one of the outlying outpatient clinics located in Mobile, AL, Pensacola, Elgin, or Panama City Beach, FL.

Duties

Knowledge and ability to overhaul, rebuild, or make major repairs to systems such as: diesel gasoline, and other types of internal combustion engines, hydraulic systems, and controls. Knowledge and ability to safely operate tractors and towed or attached equipment, mowers, front end loaders, backhoes, street sweepers, skid steers, forklifts, man lifts, stump grinders, augers, aerators, pressure washers, and various small gas and battery powered hand-held equipment. Supervises employees in the use of lawn mowers and other powered ground maintenance and heavy equipment. Knowledge and ability to perform first echelon maintenance and pre/post-start checks of the equipment and able to complete minor repairs as needed. Develops work standards, methods, and procedures using established National Codes, trade work practices, and VA standards as guidelines. Maintains an even flow of work by assigning personnel jobs to be accomplished daily. Knowledge in using a wide variety of diagnostic and test equipment, to include computer, electrical, electronic, light and pressure types to determine causes of mechanical problems. Knowledge and ability to overhaul, rebuild, or make major repairs to systems such as: diesel, gasoline, and other types of internal combustion engines, hydraulic systems, and controls. Solid knowledge of how the various equipment; mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, electronic, and fuel systems work together. Basic knowledge of the nature of the soil and features of the terrain to determine the proper approach according to the condition of the surface and subsurface. Possess the skill and knowledge of the proper techniques, usage, and safety requirements for the operation of tractors, front end loaders, backhoes, excavators, sweepers, telehandlers, forklifts, skid steer and or compact track loaders, man lifts, stump grinders, ditchers, and associated attachments. Possess the knowledge to troubleshoot and determine causes of mechanical operating problems, trace and locate defects, and make repairs to heavy mobile equipment and vehicles used in support of Engineering Department as well as vehicles in support of facility operations and administration. Knowledge of the uses of the different sets of controls and operation of the equipment and attachments and to handle these controls to perform work. Good hand, foot, eye coordination. Supervises employees in the use of lawn mowers and other powered ground maintenance and heavy equipment. Ability to move the equipment about in confined areas. Redirects individual workers and resources to accomplish unanticipated work (e.g., work resulting from "open and inspect" types of work orders) and informs higher level supervisor of the need to revise work schedules and re-estimate labor and other resources. Provides information and advice to upper management on such matters as accomplishment of assigned work schedules, budget estimates, changes in production techniques and standards, rearrangement of machinery, or other related facility changes. Plans and establishes work schedules as necessary to accomplish the mission of this facility. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: This position requires walking, standing, bending, sitting, crawling, and climbing. Incumbent must have good vision, with or without glasses. May lift or carry tools, equipment, ladders, scaffolding, parts and supplies up to 50 pounds. May occasionally lift and carry items over 50 pounds. Work is performed outside, in all types of weather, often in an open driver seat or platform, on hills, slopes, grades, rolling surfaces and forests. Operator is constantly exposed to injury due to the possibility of the equipment overturning while working on rough and uneven terrain. Subject to noise, vibration, dust, dirt and fumes from the motor and exhaust. Good hand, foot and eye coordination as well as good depth perception and a high degree of concentration are required to perform the operations necessary to grade the surface.
