About the Position: This position is with the Defense Health Agency. It is located within the Southwest Georgia Martin Army Community Hospital in Fort Moore, GA. The primary purpose of this position is responsible for accessioning, handling, and processing of gross tissue specimens and preparing tissue slides for microscopic examination by pathologists. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation

Duties

Assure the proper handling and processing of tissue samples to be examined for special procedures including different fixatives or decalcification. Select appropriate tissue staining procedures to be submitted for microscopic examination including performing special stains as requested to show various normal and abnormal tissue. Prepare technically adequate slides of tissue sections by processing tissue biopsies embedding tissue in paraffin, cutting, staining, and cover-slipping. Prepare tissue slides for microscopic examination by pathologist. Assist pathologists with frozen section procedures such as conducting quality control checks in the preparation of frozen tissue sections. Maintain accurate records on all tissue, blocks, and slides removed from files, loaned out of the department to make sure all slides are counted. Participate in training and education of staff including assisting in the training of histopathology technicians and other hospital staff. Pack and ship specimens to the required consult and/or agency. Provide input in writing of policies, regulations and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). Adhere to all laboratory practices and policies. Perform required preventive maintenance on equipment items, which require accurate monitoring of temperature and maintenance of temperature records. Ensure cleanliness of work areas to include grossing and frozen section areas.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross. Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical.
  • This position is subject to screening and update of required immunizations unless exempted for medical or administrative reasons in accordance with regulations.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
  • This position requires certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation with Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) training.
  • This position requires the employee to wear a uniform, scrubs, or other appropriate medical professional attire while on duty.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
  • Lift up to 40 lbs or more with assistance.
  • Federal Law prohibits employment of certain individuals who have committed criminal activity related to fraud, waste, or abuse against healthcare programs from employment in this position.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience in cutting and staining very thin sections of human tissue specimens for microscopic examination and testing/examining body fluids for abnormalities in cell structure.. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.
