This position is located within Facilities Management at the Bath VAMC and reports to the Maintenance and Repair Shop Supervisor. The work of the position involves constructing, altering, maintaining, and repairing buildings, structures, partitions, panels, tool cabinets, bookcases, work benches, and other items using wood, wood substitutes, and composite building materials. Additional duties include door hanging and locksmith duties.

Duties

Sets up and operates a wide variety of wood working machines and tools. Assembles items with a wide variety of joining techniques such as miters, rabbets, dados, biscuit, and mortise and tenon, and uses glues and adhesives to secure wood pieces, veneers and countertops. Constructs, installs, repairs and modifies wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness. Constructs and repairs a wide variety of structural items such as building frames, rafters, concrete forms, walls, staircases, door and window frames, interior and exterior trim and miscellaneous items such as workbenches, counter tops, bookcases, equipment cabinets, computer consoles and items requiring limited decorative trim and molding. Independently interprets drawings, blueprints and specifications and determines the layout and work sequences of work to be completed, as well as types of materials needed for the job. Independently plans and carries out each project from start to finish. Installs and finishes sheetrock surfaces. Installs and repairs ceramic floor and wall tiles, VCT and sheet flooring and suspended ceilings and tiles. Installs and repairs all door closers of any type. Repairs and changes the combinations to vaults, safes, and fireproof files. Repairs and changes codes required on the electronic security systems. Installs, repairs and combinates on one key, or a series of keys, all locks used on station. Maintains current and accurate records of the distribution of all keys to employees and the doors they access through a computerized key program. Work Schedule: Mon - Fri - 0730 - 1600 Position Description Title/PD#: Carpenter/PD05985A Physical Requirements / Working Conditions: Work is performed in wood shops and at job sites. When working in a shop, the employee stands for extended periods of time while operating machinery. The work requires considerable bending, kneeling, and stooping. Strenuous physical exertion is sometimes required when handling heavy and bulky materials. The employee may lift and carry items weighing up to 40 pounds. The employee occasionally lifts and moves heavier items. Some work is performed in shop areas where the employee is exposed to moderate or high noise levels from operating machinery, sawdust in the air, flue fumes and other hazards associated with woodworking. The employee is subject to cuts, bruises and contusions. The employee may be exposed to weather conditions and hazards of working on or around ladders and scaffolds. The employee may work in confined areas such as crawl spaces and attics which may be dusty and dirty. The employee uses protective clothing and devices.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
