This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Domestic Defense Industrial Base (DIB) & Major Range and Test Facilities Base (MRTFB) in DoD to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

Duties

Installs, tests, troubleshoots, programs, operates, maintains network switches, power surge and uninterrupted power supply equipment, miscellaneous telephone, radio, fire and intrusion alarms and related apparatus required on the installation. Analyzes network telecommunication circuit failures and other unusual transmissions system occurrences to isolate the source of the problem, determine root cause and perform repair. Recommends and implements corrective actions to a number of possible problems discovered during troubleshooting of networking and switching equipment in accordance with standards and current operating procedures. Maintains adequate supplies in warehouse and truck to accomplish work. Maintains emergency power equipment such as rectifiers, battery banks, inverters, and grounding systems. Installs, removes, maintains, modifies, troubleshoots, splices and repairs copper core and fiber optic buried, aerial and house cables. Installs, removes, maintains, modifies, troubleshoots, inspects and repairs unified communications systems including end user devices; VoIP phones, alarm systems; media converter equipment and unified communications equipment

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position
  • Due to the nature of this position, employees may be required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position involves duties that are subject to Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) regulations regarding hazardous wastes.

Qualifications

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Telecommunications Mechanic ~ without more than normal supervision which includes the ability to (1) Troubleshoot/repair electronic and electromechanical systems, telephones and/or other data circuitry components; (2) Experience with copper and fiber optic cable and/or wireless transmission principles (3) Utilize test equipment, such as oscilloscopes, digital multi meters, signal generators, digital transmission test sets, cable fault locators, and/or optical meters. - To meet the basic eligibility, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above. Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Physical Effort: The work requires frequent bending, climbing ladders and scaffolds, pulling of cables and wires, working in awkward positions, walking and standing for long periods of time. Operates within confined space. Required to lift objects up to 45 pounds unassisted. Working Conditions: The work is performed inside and outside in all types of weather. Inside work areas can range from well lighted, heated, and climatically controlled to poorly illuminated work areas such as attics, crawl spaces, and basements. Workers are exposed to dust, dirt, and falls from ladders while installing cable. Workers are exposed to bruises and minor cuts from handling cable and equipment and from using hand tools.
