Duties
The position would serve as a Health Scientist Administrator (Program Officer, PO) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Office of the Director (OD), Division of Program Coordination, Planning, and Strategic Initiatives (DPCPSI), Office of Data Science Strategy (ODSS), and will work as the Program Officer for Data Search and Discovery in the Integrated Infrastructure and Emerging Technologies (IIET) team.
The ideal candidate will have expertise and understanding of biomedical data science and superior oral and written communication skills.
The Office of Data Science Strategy has primary responsibility for implementing the NIH Strategic Plan for Data Science (https://datascience.nih.gov/strategicplan) for a FAIR and modernized biomedical data ecosystem that enables researchers to seamlessly search, access, and analyze data from across the many NIH data resources. Advancing this vision requires coordination among NIH Institutes and Centers (IC) that steward high value data resources for the research communities, and with academic and private sector researchers and developers of data services and analysis capabilities. The Integrated Infrastructure and Emerging Technologies (IIET) team coordinates with NIH ICs to identify strategic priorities to advance a FAIR biomedical ecosystem, often leading NIH-wide working groups and programs; and oversees ODSS investments in these areas. The IIET team connects computational and computer science expertise with biomedical experts to address critical needs in data science for NIH.
This position offers opportunities to support and lead cutting-edge research and solutions for data search and discovery as identified in a 2022 ODSS Search Workshop (https://datascience.nih.gov/data-infrastructure/search-workshop). Meeting the variety of needs and opportunities for data search and discovery for the NIH mission will require multiple approaches, development of new services and capabilities as well as exploratory research to address future needs, and attention to the social and ethical contexts in which data search and discovery is used in research.
The incumbent will collaborate with subject matter experts from across NIH and will be expected to represent the NIH in areas of responsibility to internal and external groups, often leading internal working groups and task forces. The incumbent will provide technical leadership and scientific guidance on research and infrastructure related to data search and discovery and will work collaboratively with IIET and ODSS management, and leaders from across NIH, to advise on future directions and strategic decisions and make funding recommendations.
