About the Position: This position is located with the Directorate of Emergency Services (DES) - Fire Protection & Prevention Division, Fort Campbell, KY. Fort Campbell lies on the Kentucky/Tennessee border between Hopkinsville, KY & Clarksville, TN about 45 miles NW of Nashville. Both visitors & residents enjoy the shops & eateries of downtown Hopkinsville & Clarksville. The cost of living is lower than the average for all major U.S. cities.
Duties
Participate in the annual Fire Prevention Week activities.
Develop fire and life safety education to installation population.
Validate fire code compliance with prescribed laws, Army regulations, and policies.
Evaluate industrial processes, installed equipment, fire alarm and fire suppression systems, and other functions within structures that apply to fire and life-safety standards.
Perform fire inspection and code enforcement activities within permanent and temporary structures.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires a Pre-employment physical.
- This position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
- This is a drug testing designated position.
- The position requires the following International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or Pro Board certifications: Fire Instructor I; Fire Inspector I and II; and Hazardous Materials Awareness.
- This position is designated as an Inclement Weather Essential position.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience is defined as: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service which includes: 1) Experience with conducting fire inspection and code enforcement duties in low-, medium, and high-hazard occupancies and industrial facilities; 2) Experience with fire engineering design processes, Community Risk Assessment, Community Risk Reduction processes to prevent the loss of life; 3) Experience participating in fire safety engineering and fire prevention program initiatives that includes instructions, regulations and international and nations safety codes; And 4) Experience performing fire prevention and community risk assessment activities independently, discussing significant issues with Fire Prevention team supervisors.
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
Certifications: In addition to the above requirements, this position requires that the incumbent possess and maintain the following DoD IFSAC or Pro-Board issued certifications: Fire Inspector I & II, Fire Instructor I, Firefighter I & II, HAZMAT Awareness, Airport Firefighter, Driver Operator-Pumper and Driver Operator-Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF). You MUST submit a copy of your certifications with your application package.
Maximum Entry Age (MEA)
The MEA for Firefighters is 37. An employee originally hired into a covered position must be hired by the last day of the month he/she reaches 37.
Maximum Reentry Age
An employee who previously served on a covered position may be rehired past the MEA as long as he/she is able to complete 20 years of covered service by his/her mandatory retirement age. The maximum re-entry age for the individual is calculated by determining the total amount of time he/she has served on a covered position and subtracting that from age 57 if a firefighter. The employee's current age is compared to the calculated maximum re-entry age to determine if he/she can be rehired into the covered position.
Waivers to Maximum Entry Age
MEA may be waived, but only under specific circumstances and only if approved by the authorized entity: Waivers to MEA for firefighters must be approved by local Command.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).
Applicants must meet eligibility requirements including time-in-grade, time-after-competitive appointment, minimum qualifications, and any other regulatory requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.
NOTE: To support the Advancement requirement you MUST submit a copy of your latest non-award SF-50 that reflects your highest grade held on a permanent basis along with your application/resume package.
You must meet the one year time-in-grade requirement so you will need to provide an SF-50 which clearly demonstrates you meet the time-in-grade requirements. Failure to do so may affect your rating or consideration for employment.
