Duties

Under the direction and authority of a Land Surveyor, serves on survey crew performing cadastral, geodetic, and control surveys. Performs the full range of standardized survey support duties. Records survey evidence and measurement dates, stellar observations for meridians and corner descriptions. Indexes field books. Reduces raw data in the field while progressing along the survey line. Work is characterized by elements such as, measuring distances between known points sufficiently great to require periodic observation to determine azimuth and triangulations. Typically, reads distances, angles, and differences in elevation. Operates electronic measuring equipment, satellite positioning instruments and portable electronic calculators and computes simple survey calculations with programmable calculator. Assists in monumentation and recording of corner positions of a Cadastral Survey, following previously selected methods of monumentation. Oversees the setting of posts, construction of accessories, and marking of reference points.

Qualifications

At the GS-04 Level: One full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-03 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors). Qualifying specialized experience includes: - operating electronic measuring equipment such as Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and/or Global Positioning System (GPS); - assisting with the location of existing survey monuments; - loading, organization, and maintenance of survey equipment and supplies. OR Have six months of general experience that could be obtained in any type of work that demonstrates the ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. AND I have six months of specialized experience as described above. OR Have successfully completed 2 years of postsecondary education that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as surveying, engineering, industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, forestry, geography, navigation, cartography, physical science, or mathematics. OR Have successfully completed 2 years of postsecondary education that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as surveying, engineering, industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, forestry, geography, navigation, cartography, physical science, or mathematics. At the GS-05 Level: One full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors). Qualifying specialized experience includes: - routine operation of electronic measuring equipment such as Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and/or Global Positioning System (GPS); - assisting with the location of existing survey monuments; - assisting with the establishment of new survey monuments; - recovering survey evidence; - recording survey field notes; - performing basic survey computations OR Have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited institution (a) with major study in an appropriate field of surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as surveying, engineering, industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, forestry, geography, navigation, cartography, physical science, or mathematics. OR Have an equivalent combination of experience and education as described above. At the GS-06 Level: One full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 level in the Federal Service (obtained either in the private or public sectors). Qualifying specialized experience includes: - experience using survey equipment and related electronic measuring equipment such as Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), Global Positioning System (GPS), total stations, and Electronic Distance Measuring (EDM) units; - recovering survey evidence from previous surveys; - locating existing survey monuments; establishment of new survey monuments; - serving as crew member for survey related duties; - routinely gathering, recording, and processing survey data; - interpreting survey plats, deeds, or other survey related documents OR Have completed half a year of graduate level education (equivalent to at least 9 semester hours) in a directly related course in subjects such as surveying, engineering, industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, forestry, geography, navigation, cartography, physical science, or mathematics. OR Have an equivalent combination of experience and education as described above. At the GS-07 Level: One full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 level in the Federal Service (obtained either in the private or public sectors). Qualifying specialized experience includes: - routine use survey equipment and related electronic measuring equipment such as Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), Global Positioning System (GPS), total stations, and Electronic Distance Measuring (EDM) units; - evaluating survey evidence in the field to restore previous surveys; - experience guiding or leading crews to complete technical survey related duties; routinely gathering, recording, and processing survey data; - interpreting survey plats, deeds, or other survey related documents OR Have completed one year of graduate level education (equivalent to at least 18 semester hours) in a directly related course in subjects such as surveying, engineering, industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, forestry, geography, navigation, cartography, physical science, or mathematics. OR Have an equivalent combination of experience and education as described above. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: Work requires come physical exertion such as bending and walking in terrain that is rough, rocky, mountainous, and densely vegetated. Required to lift and carry equipment necessary to efficiently perform the work of the position and to provide for personal comfort and safety. This can include tools, personal protective equipment, food and water for extended periods of work away from vehicles. Work Environment: Office work is performed in a setting that is adequately lighted, ventilated, cooled and heated. When doing fieldwork, incumbent is subject to cuts and bruises, extreme and adverse weather conditions and injuries and discomforts from pests or animals. Employee will adhere to all safety rules.

Basic Requirements:
Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 or equivalent and above): Specialized experience is technical work which provided the knowledge and skills needed for work in the type of surveying involved. It must have required the use of the pertinent instruments and techniques of surveying. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include, but are not limited to, work as an engineering technician, soil conservation technician, or construction inspector.

For GS-3 or equivalent: Successful completion of 1 year of postsecondary education that included at least one course in surveying, engineering, industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, forestry, geography, navigation, cartography, physical science, or mathematics.
For GS-4 or equivalent: Successful completion of 2 years of postsecondary education that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as those shown above for GS-3 or equivalent.
