This position is located in the Prosthetic Treatment Center, Orthotic Laboratory Section. This position will support the Wheelchair Technicians in the Wheelchair Repair Shop.

Duties

The incumbent provides maintenance to, modification of and repairs to powered and manual wheelchair systems. The incumbent assembles such equipment, designs components not available from the manufacturer, and trains the patient in the safe, effective use and maintenance of the equipment provided. Maintains and repairs mechanical/electrical medical equipment which includes: manual and electric wheelchairs. Determines nature and extent of repairs required, evaluating equipment to determine economic feasibility for repair or replacement. Tests equipment after repair, and new equipment to assure proper functioning; conducts preventative maintenance inspection of equipment to assure proper functioning; conducts preventive maintenance inspection of equipment, and instructs user in operator-level preventative maintenance of equipment. Documents service or treatment provided in patients' records to comply with Quality Management and The Joint Commission (TJC) requirements. Maintains adequate inventory of parts and supplies to accomplish duties. Check, receives, and certifies all receipts for stock replenishment for materials ordered ensuring exact receipt of quantity and quality specified for order. These duties can be performed in a number of different environments, including but not limited to an office setting, fitting rooms, the laboratory where fabrication is conducted as well as the therapy treatment rooms and the waiting areas where counseling and discussions with veterans and family members would be conducted.
