The full performance, Emergency Department (ED) Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) is assigned to the Department of Veteran Affairs, Veterans Health Administration (VHA). This position serves as an advanced technician for the ED for patients who are present for treatment.

Duties

Major duties include but are not limited to: Performs ongoing patient care duties in the ED. Performs observation-based screening and collecting patient information in collaboration with licensed personnel. Obtains patient health history for chief complaints, medication history, and information about health-related or high-risk conditions that may impact the patient's health status. Complete approved templates and tools, for example the MiniCog screening established by the agency. Assist with or perform other related approved technical health care procedures under the direction and supervision of the licensed personnel as competency is demonstrated and documented. Assists ED licensed personnel with the delivery of care to patients with complex, specialized, and potentially life-threatening situations. Possess the knowledge to recognize life threatening situations and act to correct these emergent situations according to established national or local protocols. Assists with airway management using bag-valve-mask (BVM), oral airway or nasal airway. Provides support, relief, and coverage as needed to central station telemetry. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR) - Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. GS-XX grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: Knowledge and skill sufficient to give injections, catheterize, irrigate, suction and provide chest care (deep breathing, coughing, etc.) to patients.; b) Knowledge of diseases and illnesses (such as diabetes) and skill sufficient to participate in patient/family teaching conferences; c) Knowledge and skill sufficient to identify and use equipment, drugs and supplies properly and to communicate proper use to nurses, medical staff and family members d) Knowledge of the standard medical terminology for the human body, physical and emotional reactions, nursing care, pharmacology, and contraindications to medications, and skill sufficient to provide and gather information during patient care and family conferences with nurses, doctors, patients and family members. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. OR Education: Have successfully completed one full year of graduate education that is directly related to the work of this position. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED - must have Conferred date of degree for full credit. Education cannot be credited without documentation). One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. OR Combination: Have an equivalent combination of education and experience to qualify at the GS-7 level. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: The work requires a level of physical fitness that allows for standing for extended periods, heavy lifting to position patients, and manual dexterity to perform clinical procedures. The work will require recurrent bending, lifting, stooping, standing, squatting, stretching, sitting and walking.
