The purpose of the position is to perform a wide variety of emergency repairs throughout the medical center. This position is in the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System, Engineering Service, West Los Angeles Section, Pipefitting and Emergency Mechanics Unit Los Angele, CA.
Duties
Ability to perform frequent and periodic inspections of all equipment, including arrangement for outside construction support as required; inventorying and securing of all equipment and supplies in the Carpenter, Locksmith and Painter Section.
Knowledge, skill and ability to carry out special assignments, as delegated, and perform any other related duties that may be assigned.
Have knowledge and understand the mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic system and principles of operation of a fix or mobile equipment, machines, and machinery.
Initiates electronic work orders, documents man hours, findings, repairs and materials use on identified deficiencies and includes time spent on administrative functions and requirements of the Electrical Shop, Engineering Service and the VA San Diego Healthcare System.
Performs at the journeymen level on a variety of equipment and systems, working with a team of different trades to the betterment of equipment, systems and service to our veterans and their dependents.
Conducts initial inspections, testing and operation of newly acquired equipment and machinery, documents and retains records, warranties, drawings and manuals.
Performs electrical work through making repairs accomplished by replacing, tightening, splicing, soldering, insulating defective wiring, controls, equipment, switches, relays, loose connections, fittings, and thermostats.
Troubleshoots, diagnose, modify, and repair faulty equipment and machinery and power and control issues using electrical and electronic test equipment.
Responsible for installing, repairing, and adjusting air conditioning and refrigeration equipment throughout the medical center.
Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on a variety of critical hospital equipment and systems that achieve required climatic conditions.
Work Schedule: Rotating Shift to include 6A-4P / 2p-MID / 10P-8A / MID-10A / Shift schedule rotating and Holiday coverage required. Rotations are every 8 weeks.

Physical Requirements: The incumbent must exert moderate to arduous physical effort involving working, standing, bending, stooping, lifting and crawling while performing his/her duties at the Medical Center. He/she must be able to climb ladders and scaffolding. He/she must be capable of climbing over and under equipment, working in confined spaces, crawl spaces and other isolated areas. The incumbent must be able to work for extended periods in uncomfortable positions and conditions. He/she must be able to lift loads of up to 25 pounds unassisted.
Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
