This position is located in the Die Manufacturing Division, United States Mint, in Philadelphia. The incumbent is proficient in all die manufacturing processes and experienced in troubleshooting and repairing machine tools, to include Computer Numerical Control (CNC) programming. The incumbent also manufactures, repairs, and rebuilds parts, products, and items of equipment from raw stock of different metals, alloys, and other materials using a variety of machine tools with minimal supervision.
Duties
The following are the duties of this position at the WG-11 If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties and will receive training to help you grow in this position.
Fabricate parts, products, and other items from blueprints, drawings, instructions, or samples. Prepare machine tools, including conventional and specialized, automated, and/or other non-standard equipment, to accomplish fabrication processes. Plan the sequence of operations for work that requires innovative set-ups, techniques, and tools. Plan, coordinates, and/or performs related work processes, such as heat treating and annealing.
Troubleshoot CNC machines. Edit programs by machining a sample, checking dimensional accuracy, and making corrections through manual input or changes to the program. When necessary, de-bugs machine programs and makes or recommends program changes.
Plan and lay out work processes using shop mathematics to compute and verify dimensions. Identify any necessary information missing from blueprints or work orders. Decide which work procedures, machine tools, equipment, and attachments are appropriate for each operation. Determine speeds, feeds, coolants and coolant flow, etc. necessary to machine and finish the required product. Perform the full range of machining operations. Maintain dimensional accuracy throughout the process using various precision measuring devices.
Set-up, program, operate and maintain various types of laser equipment used to manufacture edge letter segments, split collars, serialization of coinage dies and texturing proof coinage dies. Capable of learning software and hardware used to control/manipulate and run programs. Create programs by converting CAD data into engraving and frosting routines. Train and align vision systems to work in conjunction with laser programs.
