This position is located in the Division of Behavioral Health (DBH), Great Plains Area Office in Aberdeen, South Dakota. The incumbent works under the supervision of the Psychiatric Services Officer supporting Great Plains Area (GPA) DBH crisis response & suicide prevention activities at assigned GPA service units. The GPA DBH oversees the mission of providing integrated quality & culturally sensitive/competent clinical mental health services through IHS facilities across the Great Plains Area.
Duties
Providing counseling services to individuals eligible for services provided by the IHS in homes, schools, clinics, job sites, and other community locations within the GPA.
Assist patients and their families in utilizing available community, state, and federal resources for the purpose of improving their social, physical and psychological health Documents observations, interventions, referrals, and other measures taken to provide
Documents observations, interventions, referrals, and other measures taken to provide services including patient response in the SOAP format, using approved BHS Templates and per IHS medical records policy
Provides crisis management and routine therapy for clients, focusing on particular problem situations which are high risk in nature i.e. alcohol and drug abuse, domestic violence, depression, reactions to medical conditions, and specifically, psychosocial problems related to and affecting medical condition
Provides independent professional decisions and recommendation for patient's continuity of care by providing structured placements for acute and chronic patients in psychiatric facilities, transitional residency, group and/or other secure units. Advocates for care in community based, contract care rehabilitation or long-term services.

In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below-
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks:
GS-11: 1 year of specialized experience that equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. This experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service as described in the vacancy announcement. Experience includes providing a full range of professional mental health services to patients of all ages in a hospital or clinic setting that includes evaluation, diagnosis, counseling, psychotherapy, crisis intervention, referral and treatment of mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
Time In Grade (Merit Promotion Candidates Only)
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
