About the Position: Required to live aboard the Dredge WHEELER during his/her tour of duty, which will be 14 days on duty/14 days off duty. Normal shift is 12 hour days with shift work and 12-hour days required when needed to stand watch. Due to the working schedule on the WHEELER, it is not a requirement to live locally, but it would be advantageous to the employee to avoid travel expenses as the Corps of Engineers does not pay transportation to and from the vessel.

Duties

Serves as Electrician on a self-propelled sea-going diesel powered large class hopper dredge. During absences of the Chief Electrician, is held responsible for the operation and performance of electrical systems and devices by the Chief Engineer. Observes gauges, listens, notes unusual conditions (heating, oil or grease loss, loose fittings, broken or inoperative units, etc.) and makes repairs or adjustments as required.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.

  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
  • United States Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC), endorsed with "Qualified Member of Engine Department (QMED): Electrician"
  • One year probationary may be required.

Duties require long periods of standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Incumbent is required to exert moderate to heavy physical effort in handling equipment. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up tools and equipment. Incumbent must possess color perception is order to perform troubleshooting and repair work on the full range of equipment. Working Conditions - Work is performed primarily in closed areas with some work outside. Much time is spent in or adjacent to the engine room area with its attendant noise, heat and flames. Works in very close places and in awkward positions. Employee is subject to the usual electrician hazards, involving shock, strain, burns, cuts, falls from ladders and fumes and heat while working in confined quarters.
