This position provides an operator to perform the operation, repair and maintenance of steam boilers, accessories and auxiliary equipment Tasks will include various checks, tests, adjustments, and trouble-shooting tasks to determine the need for and the performance of repair and operation work. The incumbent will be required to repair and work rotating shifts and act as operator in charge. When not the operator in charge, journeyman level maintenance mechanic duties are performed.
Duties
Incumbent disassembles and repairs various sizes and types of heavy and complicated industrial heating equipment.
Disassembles units and cleans parts with solvent, steam, and air.
Fits parts and reassembles units, which involves the checking, removal and replacement of bearings, gages, pressure regulators, valves, heating coils, traps, burners, and other related parts.
Repairs fire boxes under boilers.
Repairs refractories in boiler firebox, baffles in boilers, gaskets and gage glasses as needed.
Washes boilers and cleans fireboxes.
Removes and installs equipment by bolting and unbolting from the frames.
Measures, cuts, and threads pipe of various sizes. Reads and comprehends maintenance-repair manuals and prints.
Overhauls feed water pumps, condensate return pumps, brine pumps and fuel oil pumps either steam or electrically driven.
Overhauls pump governors, feed water regulator, valves (gates, globe and needle) and pressure reducing diaphragms.
Tests and treat water used in steam production and cooling water, also maintain proper water levels and constant steam pressure.
The boiler plant consists of four high-pressure boilers, each rated at 7762 pounds of steam per hours, plus associated equipment, such as storage tank deaerator, pre-heater, steam station, flow controls, water softener, high pressure pumps, air compressor, air dryers, and related controls.Maintain constant predetermined boiler pressures while meeting changing load requirements.
Engages auxiliary and accessory equipment, such as induced draft fans, soot blowing equipment, fuel handling equipment, valves, softeners, etc.
Makes adjustment of combustion controls.
Performs pre-operational checks before putting boiler and firing equipment in operation.
Supplies judgment in the operation of boilers under emergency conditions in accordance with established procedures for boiler failure, power outages, low and high water conditions.
Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
Work Schedule: Full time, Monday through Friday, 12 hour shifts from 12-12

Physical Requirements: Incumbent must be able to climb stairways and ladders, lift heavy objects (up to 100 pounds), crawl and stoop in close spaces. Heavy physical exertion is required in opening and closing heavy valves, cleaning equipment, lubricating, and other maintenance work. Crawling into small openings and working in confined spaces in cramped positions is also required.
Working Conditions: Employee will be subjected to abnormal heat, noise, cold, toxic amounts of gas and handling of poisonous chemicals, subject to hazards of boiler explosions, steam, blowbacks, scalding water, burns from contact with boilers and steam pipes, and electrical shock. Required to work in inadequately lighted and ventilated areas with emergency trouble light. Mental application is a necessity due to the complexity of plant equipment and systems being operated and being alert at all times for equipment malfunctions causing an emergency. Some work requires long periods of standing, walking, bending and reaching.
