Duties

Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work for most of the year, but you will be in a non-pay status from approximately November 12 thru November 25. Working green horses to work with bison in pen settings as well as hazing in open country. Shoeing horses that are used for the bison project. Rounding up horses in large winter pasture setting for vaccination. Working with green or unbroke horses to make them ready for summer ops. Assist co-workers in training other park personnel in riding techniques. Feeding large herds of animals and administering necessary medical treatment as situations arise. Assist in day to day facility maintenance and operations at the barn facility. I This position will be duty stationed near Gardiner, Montana at the north entrance to Yellowstone National Park. Gardiner is located 5 miles north of Yellowstone National Park headquarters at Mammoth Hot Springs, Wyoming. Elevation at Gardiner is 5,314 feet. Temperatures vary from an average of 85 degrees Fahrenheit in summer to sub-zero at times in winter. A school is available, with kindergarten through 12, in Gardiner. Many community facilities such as a drugstore, a grocery store, day care, motels, and restaurants are available in Gardiner. A medical clinic is available in Mammoth. All other services are available within 55 to 75 miles from Gardiner. Government housing may be available Physical Demands: This position involves walking, bending, reaching, standing, stooping, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions and exerts heavy physical effor in lifting/moving of heavy side packs in excess of 50 pounds, feed sacks, hay bales, etc.. Use of arms and legs while hitching loads to pack animals on steep or slick terrain. Requires good physical stamina with strength in arms, back and legs for long hours in the saddle and driving heavy trucks for long distance and at odd hours. Working Conditions: Incumbent works outdoors in all weather and temperature extremes and in steep mountain terrain. At times working alone in remote backcountry areas. Must be able to sustain self in these conditions. Conditions expose incumbent to the possibility of broken bones, cuts, bruises, strains, insect bites, danger from animals crushing, striking, kicking or biting. Frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, bruises and infections.
