About the Position: This position is located at Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico. Fort Buchanan is located by Guaynabo City, Puerto Rico. It is near the capital of San Juan. Puerto Rico boasts fabulous ocean views, tropical weather, and lush green mountains. The island is approximately 100 miles by 35 miles and similar in size to Connecticut.

Duties

Perform maintenance on facilities electrical systems such as heating, ventilation and air conditioning. Use shop mathematics to plan and compute complex projects features. Interpret and apply building plans and blueprints. Receives work orders accompanied by building plans, shop sketches or blueprints. Utilize a variety of tools and test equipment such as system sets, frequency meters, multi meters, voltmeters, and amphometers used to localize trouble in components and circuits.

Requirements

  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Requirement.
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Direct deposit of pay is required.
  • One probationary period may be required.
  • Appointment subject to a suitability/fitness determination, as determined by a background investigation.
  • This position requires a Tier 1 (T1) investigation with Childcare Checks since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age.
  • A pre-placement medical examination is required.
  • A valid state driver's license is required.
  • Must possess a Chloro-Fluorocarbon (CFC) certification.
  • This position has rotating shifts and may be required to work first or second shift.

Qualifications

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision. To meet the screen out element, applicants should document experience or show the ability to do the following repairing electrical components; performing maintenance on HVAC systems; and building repairs. Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal SupervisionAbility to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading)Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and EquipmentKnowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Physical Effort: Heaviest weight handled by the employee unassisted will normally be 50 pounds, and with assistance 100 pounds or more. Uses lifting devices or obtains assistance in moving heavy items. Works from ladders, scaffolding and/or platforms in hard-to-reach areas, requiring the employee to work in close quarters or in cramped positions. Work frequently requires climbing, stooping, stretching, bending and kneeling for long periods of time. Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, on elevated structures, and in cramped areas. Incumbent is subject to cuts and bruises from hand or powered tools, falls from ladders or scaffolds, and danger of accidents when operating vehicles. Work involves exposure to noise exceeding 85 db, requiring use of hearing protection equipment. Gloves and safety goggles are worn occasionally when using power tools. Unpleasant odors are encountered occasionally. Inside work areas are sometimes damp and drafty or subject to inadequate ventilation.
