Duties

You will administer training, orientation, indoctrination, and education programs for fire safety and awareness. You will monitor a paramedic and emergency medical technician pre-hospital care program operation for compliance with regulations. You will collaborate with fire fighter personnel to ensure emergency responses (e.g., fire suppression, injured victims, hazardous spill cleanup) are assigned. You will maintain inventory records for materials or equipment used by fire suppression personnel. You will develop airfield rescue firefighting criteria to direct aircraft fire suppression. You will establish performance standards for junior firefighters or employees. You will evaluate the work performance of junior firefighters or employees. You will relay patient information with a receiving facility (e.g., hospital, aid unit) using communication equipment. You will apply advanced airway procedures (e.g., continuous positive airway pressure [CPAP], automatic transport ventilator device) to establish an airway during life threatening situations. You will interpret an electrocardiogram (EKG) for a patient with an unstable heartbeat to determine future medical treatment. You will administer medications and solutions via different methods (e.g., oral, intravenous, rectal, intramuscular, sublingual, endotracheal under the direction of protocols or a physician) to treat patients. You will prioritize emergency treatment of patients suffering from multiple traumas to stabilize the patient and increase their chance of survival. You will complete written reports and records on emergency services incidents, patients, drugs administered equipment, or supplies used. You will prepare practical exercises to evaluate student firefighter training progress. You will perform structural firefighting and rescue duties in buildings, housing units, or confined spaces to eliminate and control fires.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at the equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-08) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector: Performing and providing structural and wild land firefighting, emergency medical response and treatment (e.g., Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR); basic, intermediate, and advanced life support (ALS); airway management, emergency childbirth, mass casualty triage), rescue operations (e.g., high and low angle rescue, trench confined space rescue, auto extrication), hazardous materials response, responding to airfield and aircraft emergencies, and transporting emergency personnel and patients safely to emergency room. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. ADDITIONAL REQUIRMENTS: You must possess a current National Registry or State Certification as Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic (EMT-P). You will be required to possess and maintain certification a FIREFIGHTER I and II by the Department of Defense (DoD), International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or ProBoard. You will be required to obtain and maintain current FIREFIGHTER certifications: Hazardous Material Awareness, Hazardous Material Operations, and Hazardous Materials Technician. You will be required to obtain and maintain current FIREFIGHTER certifications: Driver Operator Pumper and Aerial You must be able to obtain and maintain a current FIREFIGHTER certification: Driver Operator Motor Water Supply You must be able to obtain and maintain a current: Airfield Operators permit and Airport Firefighter certification. You will be required to possess and maintain a current Emergency Vehicle Operations Certification (EVOC) or obtain within 6 months of hire. You will be required to possess and maintain a current U.S. Government Motor Vehicle Operator's Identification card. You will be required to work an uncommon tour of duty (may include weekend, nights, overtime, or holidays) and rotating shift work. You will be required to work hours and conditions that are in close contact with Supervisors and coworkers for long periods of time (24 to 72 hrs.) You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift. You must be able to work under emergency conditions giving clear, definitive instructions, in a decisive manner to firefighting forces and other emergency service personnel. This position is performed indoors, outdoors, in all types of weather conditions and is subject to heat, cold, smoke, wind, humidity, and stress. This position requires the use of specialized protective clothing and respiratory protection. This position is subject to exposure from hazardous materials that include chemicals, fuels, biological agents, radioactive particles, and explosives. The provision of Advanced Life Saving (ALS) Emergency medical services exposes to such hazards such as infections or contagious diseases. This position may require responding to calls for fires and emergencies onboard vessels such as ocean going tugs, barges, ships, and small boats. You may be required to duties and responsibilities of the GS 9 Supervisory Firefighter in his/her absence in IAW DoDI 6055.6 You will be required to complete a knowledge and skills interview before a local medical board that may include the Medical Director/EMS Assistant Chief prior to employment and as required during employment.. ***** If applicant holds a current National EMT-P Certification they must convert to a North Carolina within 6 months.
