This position is located in Joshua Tree National Park, in the Science & Resource Stewardship Division.
The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Joshua Tree National Park is January, but can be variable due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: January 2024

Duties
Technician work is typically associated with and supportive of a professional field; work may involve substantial elements of the work of the professional field, but requires less than full knowledge of the field involved. This position is intended to report to a specialist or resources manager in the same or a related field. If the incumbent is not supervised by a professional specialist (i.e., a professional archeologist), then technical direction must be obtained from a specialist in a central office or center.
MAJOR DUTIES:
Participates in basic archeological field surveys by walking over the landscape and searching for archeological features and artifacts.
Uses tools and equipment common to archeological functions. Processes artifacts and specimens recovered in the field.
Prepares specimens to be sent to dating labs. Identifies, labels, and packages artifacts for curation.
Communicates information and maintains working relationships.
Records data and prepares survey records.
Conducts excavation and testing of archeological sites, including the careful recovery of sample materials.
Two distinct desert ecosystems, the Mojave and the Colorado, come together in Joshua Tree National Park. A fascinating variety of plants and animals make their homes in a land sculpted by strong winds and occasional torrents of rain. Dark night skies, a rich cultural history, and surreal geologic features add to the wonder of this vast wilderness in southern California.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by 11:59 EST when the applicant cut-off is reached (which may be sooner than 09/12/2023).
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.
To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: participating in archaeological field surveys; searching for archaeological features and artifacts and recording survey results through field forms, site maps, and photographs; conducting supervised excavation of archaeological sites; carrying out preliminary laboratory analysis; and entering data into computerized systems. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least a four-year course of study above high school at an accredited educational institution leading to a bachelor's degree in anthropology, archaeology, or related fields. You MUST provide a copy of your transcripts at the time of application.

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first take the number of semester hours (or equivalent) earned towards a bachelor's degree, in excess of 60 semester hours, and divide by 60 semester hours (or equivalent). Then take the number of months of full-time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You MUST provide a copy of your transcripts at the time of application.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
CTAP/ICTAP Statement: Current surplus and current or former displaced Federal individuals who have special priority selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) must be well qualified for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection. To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an
accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
If you are using
education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
