About the Position: This position is located at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center with the Director for Surgery in the Department of Surgery Audiology/Speech, Speech Language, Bethesda, MD Parking at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center is limited, the use of commuting alternatives is recommended. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation

Duties

Perform the highest level of clinical expertise, provide precedent-setting diagnoses, treatment, and case management to patients experiencing a variety of cognitive-linguistic, swallowing, and voice impairments and disorders. Specific diagnoses/populations will include (E)ILO/PVFM, gender-affirming voice, and craniofacial anomalies Design, develop, and apply new approaches and innovative methods of problem-solving in the evaluation, treatment, management, rehabilitation, and resolution of unique caseload assignments. Apply innovative diagnostic, therapeutic, and clinical trial techniques. Design and execute novel and innovative research in the speech pathology field. Participate in advanced clinical research projects, relative to diagnostic evaluation, treatment and/or rehabilitation of communication and cognitive disorders. Participate in the development of protocols to investigate efficiency and effectiveness of new clinical tests, clinical practice guidelines, and standards of care. Maintain education and training responsibilities associated with speech pathology graduate students. Initiate and participate in research initiatives to advance the field of speech-language pathology and the application to military readiness.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education /experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement for Speech/Language Pathologist: Licensure: A full, current, and unrestricted license to practice Speech/Language Pathology in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Note: You must submit a copy of your licensure with your application package. Education: A graduate or higher level degree that included 18 semester hours in the field of speech pathology with approved clinical practice. Note: You must submit a copy of your transcripts showing you meet the education requirement with your application package. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience (may include 3 months only of CFY) which includes evaluating patients with complex communication (including voice), swallowing, and cognitive disorders and providing education to patients or staff. Experience with intarprofessional collaboration with Otolaryngology, Neurology, Pulmonology, and other professionals for education and patient care. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12) A Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in Speech-Language Pathology from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) is required. Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
