About the Position: This position is located at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas.
Duties
Incumbent conducts routine and emergency care and treatment of animal patients and performs daily checks to ensure regulation of room temperature and humidity.
Restrains animals in order to facilitate treatment.
Determines pulse, temperature, and respiratory rate during treatment or minor surgical procedures and notifies veterinarian of abnormal readings.
Collects specimens for laboratory exams and performs standardized laboratory tests such as fecal exams for internal parasites, and various blood tests.
Ensures all animal medical records are updated daily.
Euthanizes animals in a humane and professional manner, and properly disposes of animal cadavers.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
- Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- A pre-placement medical examination is required.
- Moderate to heavy lifting up to 45 pounds is required.
- This position may require the incumbent to work on call during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.

Qualifications for Animal Health Technician GS-05:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes providing care and treatment of animal patients, monitoring animal patient vital signs, and collecting specimens for laboratory exams. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).
OR
Education: Four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study in an academic field related to appropriate work of the position, or a bachelor's degree with at least 24 semester hours of courses in zoology, biology, chemistry, or agricultural subjects. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-04).
Certification Preferred:
Certification as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) is PREFERRED, but NOT REQUIRED.
Education
FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
