The Supervisory Medical Supply Technician (MST) functions as a first-level supervisor responsible for the oversight of a group of MSTs, with administrative responsibility for planning and directing the work. Oversees attendance and leave, including approval of sick and annual leave and vacation schedules. Informs higher level management of anticipated vacancies or increases in workload. Resolves informal complaints of employees and communicates with union representatives.

Duties include but are not limited to:
He/she will develop duty assignments based on staffing levels, workload and priorities for the department.
He/she will review subordinates work to adjust assignments and to evaluate learning needs. If learning needs are identified, the Supervisor will conduct or assign training as needed.
He/she will evaluate employee performance and behavior, and if deficient, will initiate appropriate corrective and disciplinary actions.
He/She will recommend staffing and shift changes as needed to the Chief of SPS.
He/She will develop monthly staffing schedules, approve leave, and maintain attendance records. He/she will coordinate all operational activities for the department.
He/she will prioritize workload on a daily basis.
He/she will resolve informal customer complaints and follow up as necessary.
He/she will address, investigate and resolve employee problems and complaints, provide instruction, guidance and direction to SPS staff under his/her direct supervision.
He/she will be responsible for 100% accountability of all instruments and equipment assigned to the department.
He/she will complete equipment inventory reviews and provide signed accountability forms to Chief, SPS upon completion. Submits report of survey for items not located on inventory.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency Requirement - Per VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section A, Paragraph 3j: No person will be appointed under authority of 38 U.S.C., chapter 73 or 74, to serve in a direct patient-care capacity in VHA who is not proficient in written and spoken English.
Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or (3) Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
Certification. None.
Grade Determinations: In additional to meeting the basic requirements as stated above, you must have the following:
GS-08 Supervisory Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
1. Ability to manage, interact and deal with individuals of varying backgrounds.
2. Ability to direct staff and manage tasks to be completed.
3. Ability to oversee and supervise all aspects of decontamination, preparation, sterilization, monitoring, and distribution of RME.
4. Ability to perform a full range of supervisory duties, including assigning, planning and evaluating work, recommending awards, approving leave, identifying training needs, and resolving staff issues.(KSAs must be clearly reflected in resume under description of duties in order to be found qualified for this position/grade level).
Preferred Experience:
Minimum 2 years sterile processing experience
Minimum 1-2 years of management/lead experience

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-8.
Physical Requirements: The incumbentmay be required to work in areas that are hot, cold, drafty and poorly lighted. The incumbent may be subject to the possibility of falls, scrapes, cuts, bruises, and other injuries from material handling equipment. The work requires standing and walking during the entire workday and frequent bending and lifting of items (occasionally weighing as much as 50 pounds). The work requires dexterity and visual acuity for inspecting, cleaning, disinfecting, disassembly and assembly of instrumentation. The incumbent maybe required to transport equipment throughout the MCD facilities and CBOCs.
