Employee will serve as a Medical Technician aligned in the centralized processing area of the clinical laboratory located at the Richard L. Rodebush Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Indianapolis, IN.

Duties

Duties will include, but may not be limited to the following:
Operates analyzers, centrifuges, incubators, balances, analytical scales, and similar laboratory instruments. Responsible for operation, maintenance and supplies for the automated specimen processor.
Performs computerized accessioning, labeling, and processing specimens to include centrifugation, aliquoting all specimens, especially urines, and delivery to the point of testing.
Prepares and packages specimen samples for shipping according to regulatory guidelines.
Complies with safety guidelines and handling specimens mandated by The Joint Commission and College of American Pathologists.
Maintains equipment in accordance with manual specifications and standard procedures.
Submits specimens for testing at reference laboratories.
Ensures sound infection control practices are followed and that the correct personal protective equipment is used for tasks performs.
Performs other duties as necessary.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 3:30pm - 12:00am
DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Qualifications
To qualify for this Medical Technician GS-5 position, applicants must meet one of the following qualifications.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Requires one full year of specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Specialized experience includes: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. At this level, specialized experience must include processing specimens for testing to include labeling, centrifugation, decanting, and aliquoting, etc. and assessing sample integrity and suitability; and using automated laboratory computer systems. -OR-
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position to be filled, such as chemistry, hematology, blood banking, microbiology (including serology), and/or biological sciences. -OR-
COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school related education (in excess of 2 years) combined with specialized experience are also qualifying.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is performed in a laboratory atmosphere and requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as prolonged walking, bending, recurrent and prolongs standing and moderate lifting. The work requires specific physical characteristics, abilities, and dexterity needs to perform intricate analytical and technical procedures. Entering patient information, test orders, and data in a computer may result in physical problems from the effects of repetitive motion and eyestrain. Required to lift and position patients in wheelchairs. May require heavy lifting at times to relocate clinic or lab equipment or patients. Full use of both hands necessary.
