Serves as maintenance mechanic helper with the Rome VA , assisting journeyman Maintenance Mechanics by performing the simpler and more routine tasks. Performs a variety of craft duties involving the maintenance, repair, and improvement of the facilities and grounds of the Rome CBOC.
Duties
Assists journeyman on and off job sites by cutting and nailing lumber, measuring and cutting materials to required length and dimensions, loading, unloading and carrying materials, getting tools, holding materials in place. Operates hand and power tools. Assists with simple carpentry repairs and modifications such as door and framework repairs or replacement, roof repairs, replacing door locks and hinges, fastening loose boards and window frames, repairing drywall and flooring, installing shelves and interior/exterior trim, and replacing ceiling and floor tiles. Assists in building -wide floor care to include mainaining the floors ofthe building with a clean and professionally finished appearance. Assists with preparation and application of prime coats, touch-up, spot and rough painting, and under close supervision finish painting of wooden, metal, and drywall surfaces as needed using brushes and rollers. Assists with basin cleaning by operating fire hoses; clears roof and street drains; shovels snow; and spreads sand and ice melt; makes minor road repairs by breaking up cracked or damaged portions of roadway and patching with cold patch or asphalt, makes sidewalk and curb repairs by preparing forms and placing concrete; assists with fence repairs; cuts and removes fallen trees, and performs other common laborer tasks, etc. Loads equipment and materials for transport. Operates equipment such as mowers, tampers, trimmers, chain saws, floor buffers, and ride on floor care machines. Operates motor vehicles up to and including 3/4 ton (1500 pound) trucks to transport self, equipment, and materials to and from job sites between Syracuse, Rome and leased properties.

Physical Requirements:Work requires considerable standing, stooping, kneeling and bending, and working in overhead, stretched, cramped and awkward positions. Stands for considerable periods of time while operating machinery or other tasks. Works on roofs, ladders, and scaffolding and in confined spaces. Arm movement is considerable with frequent reaching with at least one arm/hand to load/unload tools and place work items, operate tools, and bring items to journeyman workers. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 pounds; occasionally handles heavier items.
Working Conditions:
Incumbent may work inside or outside, sometimes in inclement weather, and sometimes for extended periods of time. Inside work may occur in drafty and wet locations. Some work is performed in areas where the worker is exposed to moderate or high noise levels from operation of tools and machinery. Can be subjected to vibration, spray, dust, dirt, and fumes. May work on and around scaffolds, ladders, and in and around shored locations. Subject to cuts, bruises, and contusions, and the possibility of broken bones. Work may be in confined spaces. Uses protective devices when necessary, including ear plugs, safety glasses, etc.
