Employee will be assigned to the Office of Research and Development, Research and Development Service, VA Eastern Colorado Healthcare System, Aurora, CO, providing laboratory management and site support and performing a variety of specialized and complex procedures in support of research protocols.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** NOTE: This is a TERM appointment (not-to-exceed 3 years). Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration (more than 1 year but not more than 4). Term employees are eligible to earn leave and generally have the same benefits as permanent employees including health and life insurance, within-grade increases and Federal Employees Retirement System and Thrift Savings Plan coverage. Term appointments may be extended without further competition (up to the 4 year maximum). The appointment to a Term position does not confer eligibility for promotion or reassignment to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment. NOTE: This is a part-time position (20 hours/week). Benefits and time-off accrual will be prorated and based on your part-time work schedule. Duties include, but may not be limited to the following: Manages the research laboratory to include scheduling of experiments, ordering of laboratory supplies, tracking chemical inventory and waste, and general laboratory maintenance. Uses technical methods and procedures, management practices, agency policies and programs, and methods and practices of the science(s) or discipline(s) supported to design, coordinate, and execute complete projects utilizing scientific literature and the organization's technical and administrative guides. Collaborates with the Principal Investigator (PI) in phases of the research process. Performs a large variety of experimental procedures and techniques to test research hypotheses including biochemical, molecular, cellular, animal and/or human tissue samples. Utilizes a variety of laboratory instrumentation in the performance of procedures. Maintains accurate, organized, and up-to-date laboratory records. Conducts library research on theoretical and scientific aspects of experiments. Assists with laboratory budgeting, purchasing, inventory, and equipment maintenance and repair. Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Position is part-time, Monday - Friday, 20 hours per week between the hours of 8:00am and 4:30pm. Employee will not work 8 hour shifts and will not exceed 20 hours per week. This position includes a Selective Placement Factor (skill, knowledge, ability or other worker characteristic basic to - and essential for - satisfactory performance of the job). Selective Placement Factors are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for a position. Applicants who do not meet it are ineligible for further consideration. The Selective Placement Factor for this position is: Prior experience working in a biomedical research laboratory setting. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: In addition to meeting the above, applicants must also possess one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped them with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-8 grade level in the Federal Service. Experience must have been related to the work of the position for which application is made. The specialized experience required for some positions in this series is normally work performed in a controlled environment. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: research activity or control program work; nursery work that required the growing and maintenance of plants in a controlled environment; work comparable to that with a large dairy farm where production records, animal environment, and sanitary conditions were kept in accordance with modern dairy practice. This specialized experience also includes managing day-to-day aspects of a laboratory to include coordination of laboratory activities; performing experimental laboratory techniques; collecting and processing tissue samples; performing data collection and analysis; and utilizing a variety of laboratory instruments. OR SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) Successful completion of two (2) years of graduate education or a master's degree in a field of study directly related to the work of this position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one (1) year of full-time study. If that number cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours will be considered an academic year of graduate study. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) OR COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements for the GS-9. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: The work requires some physical exertion, such as regular and recurring walking, bending, and lifting/carrying objects up to 30lbs. Agility and dexterity to operate a variety of standard biomedical laboratory equipment is required, including microscopes, centrifuges, and pipettes.
