The primary purpose of this position is to lead workers who are performing as meterological technicians
providing meteorological products and services vital to the operational weather and resource protection support
efforts to Air Force, Department of Defense (DoD), and/or other government/civilian customers.
Duties
Leads meteorological technicians in the performance of weather forecasting related duties.
Provides complex operational weather support to Air Force and other DoD/government/civilian users.
Identifies, evaluates, and monitors significant weather developments, especially as they present potential
impacts on critical flight operations.
Provides weather briefings for local, transient, and other supported aircrews in person, by telephone, or by
other means.

- Work may require occasional travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft to support the mission. Work may include travel within and outside the continental United States (CONUS).
- May be required to work rotating shifts, irregular hours, and be subject to recall to support unscheduled weather support requirements at any time.
- Skill in using weather computers/software programs and experience with standard Air Force Weather systems are highly desired.
- Corrective 20/20 vision is required.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Technical and Medical Support Positions, Meteorological Technician Series 1341. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-10 grade level or equivalent in other pay systems, which includes meteorological methods, techniques, and practices, including weather observing, forecasting, communications, meteorological equipment and support procedures in determining how local conditions and reports and observations from various sources affect weather forecasts, the extent of change, and whether to take action to protect life and property; data collection, verification, information dissemination, observation, and forecasting services and systems; weather briefings. Observing and recording atmospheric characteristics, i.e., temperature, air movement, visibility, pressure, air density, cloud types. Decoding, plotting, and systematically recording data related to the physical characteristics of the atmosphere, i.e., charts, diagrams, cross sections. Collecting, analyzing, interpreting, adjusting, and verifying atmospheric and other meteorological data to confirm and improve accuracy and efficacy. Measuring meteorological phenomena with scientific equipment and instrumentation.
FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-10 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-11 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of meteorological methods, techniques, and practices, including advanced operations or approaches related
to weather observing, forecasting, communications, meteorological equipment, and support procedures.
2. Skill in using various computer software and various applications
3. Ability to measure meteorological phenomena with scientific equipment and instrumentation, and collect, analyze,
interpret, adjust, and verify atmospheric or other meteorological data to confirm and improve its accuracy and
effectiveness.
4. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships using tact and diplomacy in interacting with
individuals and unit representatives.
5. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing to prepare and present guidance products, briefings,
coordinate planning efforts, and manage program activities.
6. Ability to make timely decisions and select a course of action under high stress conditions associated with severe
weather and emergency situations.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
