In this position you will assist in all aspects of support for patient care including the movement of patients, equipment, supplies and staff assistance at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System (MVAHCS).

Duties

NOTE: This is a TERM appointment (not-to-exceed 1-2 years). Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration. Term employees are eligible to earn leave and generally have the same benefits as permanent employees including health and life insurance, within-grade increases and Federal Employees Retirement System and Thrift Savings Plan coverage. Term appointments may be extended without further competition. The major duties include but are not limited to: Ensures people entering the facility are properly screened for entry; Safely and efficiently transports patients, and other patient related articles; Receives transport requests by telephone; Prepares and maintains records reflecting work volume and is responsible for the clerical-administrative aspects of scheduling and processing necessary to complete all escort activities; Keeps up-to-date with room and clinic changes and recommends to the supervisor the revision of escort directions and resources to make these changes; Coordinates the work of volunteers assigned to Escort, assigns requests on selective consideration of transportation method needed to move the patient; Makes changes to meet deadlines and priorities set by nursing service; Assures compliance with hand-off communication procedures, checking each patient's name band prior to transporting to ensure proper patient identification; Provides and transports equipment as needed; Disinfects/wipes down transport equipment with approved cleaning product prior to each patient transport; Assists the nursing team to transfer patients to or from transport equipment, if needed; Assists patients in and out of vehicles upon arrival/departure; Attends to the care of documents relating to the patient; Reports immediately any unusual symptoms of patients, i.e., fainting or shortness of breath during time of transport; and Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday - Sunday, one overnight shift available. Two day-evening positions available. Rotating weekend and holiday shifts are required. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Ability to be on feet for the majority of the day. Will be required to stand and walk up to 10hours a day throughout the facility. Will be required to climb and descend stairs to reach certain destinations. Must have no lifting restrictions. Will be required to push and pull wheelchairs and other equipment weighing up to 400 pounds. Will be required to push and pull beds and equipment, with assistance, weighing up to 1000 pounds. Will be required to transport supplies weighing up to 20 pounds. Will be required to transport patient belongings and miscellaneous equipment weighing up to 20 pounds. Will be required to transport patients and items up and down an incline of 1 inch per foot. Will be required to have bilateral motor coordination to handle patients and equipment. Will be required to assist with physical management of disruptive behavior in patients. Work will be performed on the grounds of the MVAHCS, primarily within the hospital. Main duties include lifting and positioning patients, assisting with disruptive behavior patients in a clinical setting, transporting and moving patients, and cleaning reusable medical equipment. Pushing and pulling hospital equipment, walking distances, taking stairs, and answering cell phone will be daily occurrences. Retrieving equipment from around the hospital and grounds, and delivering equipment to various areas is expected. Assisting clinical staff with obtaining equipment and other patient support items will be needed. Work is in a Medical Center setting and involves possible exposure to contagious disease which will require appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as identified. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications.
