Interpret resources to convey national significance; connect visitors to personal relevance; facilitate shared learning; support specific learning objectives to meet educator and community needs; inform the public for compliance and safety; support management of natural and cultural resources representative of national heritage; and enhance mutual understanding for individual and social benefit.

Duties

Interpretation and Communication (at least 25% of the time) Develop and present a wide variety of formal and informal audience and learner-centered interpretive experiences using a variety of interpretive skills, techniques, and tools delivered in-person and through interpretive media. Synthesize the knowledge gained from research based on current scholarship. Plan, design, develop, and improve interpretive materials such as signs, waysides, publications, exhibits, and audio, video, and other digital content. Use correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling to write in a clear, concise, organized, and appropriate manner for the intended audience and given medium. Connect through digital content to introduce, inform, engage, and strengthen relationships. Write and/or lead the development of interpretive and informational content that: meets accessibility standards; uses images that communicate story or intent; is clear, engaging, and to the point; incorporates basic design principles; follows all NPS graphic identity standards; and uses new products or platforms. Visitor Services and Facility Operations Coordinate the operation of a visitor facility and/or information desk. Develop daily work schedules include tours of duty and location of assignments for supervisor's approval. Engage in and monitor visitor services provided by lower graded employees, critique these activities, and recommend improvements. Respond to electronic, telephone, or written inquiries from the public. Training Guide the learning of others through formal or informal methods. Train, mentor, coach, and evaluate a broad range of interpretive programs and products conducted by fellow interpreters. Education May develop/deliver in-park, off-site, and/or virtual education programs that tie NPS resources to education standards and/or are aligned with needs of educational organizations and their students. Ensure that work achieves educational outcomes, is age appropriate, incorporates multiple learning styles, and facilitates active engagement in learning. Resource Monitoring and Visitor Compliance Observe or identify park resource issues or potential problems that can be corrected or mitigated by immediate attention; take appropriate steps as needed for visitor compliance. Customer Service Demonstrate commitment to providing quality products and services by implementing best practices and recommending solutions to improve existing processes and procedures. Work with internal and external customers to assess, address, and resolve visitor concerns. Identify effective customer service practices and facilitate a collaborative, proactive, and welcoming work environment. Planning Make suggestions for program and operations improvements and efficiencies. Assist in short term budget planning with ONPS, project, and/or program funding or grants. Plan future projects and programs by submitting technical proposals through the Project Management Information System (PMIS), and applications through non-NPS funding sources. Project Coordination Coordinate the development and implementation of special projects/special events from beginning to end. Draft and/or edit project proposals, timelines, and budgets. Monitor progress and adjust as necessary to ensure successful completion. Regularly communicate updates to stakeholders and managers. Provide technical assistance to resolve problems and deliver solutions. Ensure project deliverables are on time, in budget, and of quality. Evaluate outcomes to ensure goals and objectives are met. Collaborate with non-paid staff, park partners, and stakeholders to expand the delivery of programs and services for mutual benefit. Statistical Reporting and Analysis Track, report, and analyze visitor use statistics to improve visitor services and programs. Review and respond to visitor comments and feedback. Physical Demands: The work requires some physical exertion and can involve extensive periods of standing and walking, in some cues over rough surfaces or inclines outdoors or in caves, and carrying backpacks, tools. rescue equipment, nr other loads. Some employees may engage in firefighting, search and rescue, and other strenuous activities; these employees may be required to lift or carry equipment weighing more than 50 pounds over long distances. Employees who participate in all-risk operations will be required to meet fitness requirements on a continuing basis.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-09/07/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess t least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park-related work. Examples of specialized experience could include independently researching, developing, and conducting formal and informal interpretation programs, roving programs, and youth programs. Independently managing visitor center operations to include developing work schedules, summer program schedules, coaching and auditing interpretive programs and operating and maintaining audio-visual and other interpretive equipment. May include tour leader; environmental educator or teacher; recreation or conservation area management; management assistant; or program specialist work involving the development and/or implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; or other similar work. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least two full years of graduate study leading to a master's or equivalent degree in one of the following fields: natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, social sciences, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. (Two years of graduate education is 36 semester hours or 54 quarter hours). You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. For example, I have one half year of the specialized experience described above (50% of the experience requirement), and 27 semester hours or 41 quarter hours of directly related graduate level college study in an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education). The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
